My sister and I will be staying in Houston to celebrate our birthdays in November. Flying into IAH and wanting to stay downtown. We are not planning on renting a car. Would like to find a reasonably priced hotel within walking distances to restaurants and downtown attractions, etc. Any information on transportation to/from airport would be appreciated, hotels that offer transportation and information on the metro system. Also any information on free or low cost things to do downtown would be helping. Thank you!

You need a car to get around houston, it's not walkable.

Some hotels will have shuttles or you can take a taxi.

Was houston your only choice for a place to celebrate your birthday?

I'd check out Trivago as that should give you hotel options.

We are not planning on renting a car.---- mistake number 1.

Would like to find a reasonably priced hotel within walking distances to restaurants and downtown attractions, etc.--- Your not going to. You need a car to get most places unless you want to be severely limited in your food and entertainment options.

You can stay downtown near the theater district and there are walkable restaurants and bars. You can also utilize light rail to go to midtown or the museum district. Also I think cabs within downtown / midtown are reasonable. I'd do the cab at night vs rail if it is only women in your group.

Its about $50 to take a cab from IAH downtown. There are several hotels along the red metro train line. If you stay near the museums try Hotel Zaza.

You're getting a lot of bad advice.

If you are downtown, you can get around on the rail line. There are a large number of nice restaurants in midtown, just south of downtown. Rice Village with a broad variety of restaurants and shops is just on the other side of Rice University from the rail stops. The museums and theatres are all along the rail stops.

The only place you might want to go on a weekend trip that is more than 3-4 miles from downtown is the Galleria shopping center. Its about 7-8. Restaurants (other than those in the Galleria area) are heavily concentrated in the Kirby Drive and Westheimer corridors, relatively close to downtown, so it wouldn't be an expensive cab if you wanted to venture beyond the rail corridor.

You didn't give your age range, interests or dates you plan to be in Houston, so it's difficult to suggest things to do while you're here. November is packed with events and activities of every description. Weather could be in the 70's and sunny, or chilly and rainy, or anything in between.

I've historically used Uber when travelling for work, but a couple of months ago my wife & I went out for a late night bday party. I decided to give it a try, and it really does work well inside the loop.

Very good advice if you don't want to rent a car, and don't like getting ripped off by taxis.
