Hello All!

I am looking to get my alternative teaching certificate from Texas Teachers here in Houston and cannot find any real feedback from candidates of that alternative cert program or another alternative cert program regarding the success rate. I have a MBA and a BS in Technology as well as a AA in Business. I know I am not the ideal teaching candidate but I can go as a technology or business education teacher, I am also interested in Special Education using my experience as a mother and sibling of autistic individuals and Elementary Science.

Anyways, I would like to know how likely it is for prospective teaching candidates with alternative certificates to get employed in the Houston area?

Thank you

In districts like ALiefISD, it's fairly common. Wherever there is high turnover, they accept alternative certification.

Meyerland is correct. From firsthand experience, the alternate certification candidates will most likely have to take initial jobs in less desirable districts for a few years in order to get experience to be competitive in the more elite districts. The exception to that is if the certification is in something like math, a hard to fill science or special ed.

Getting a job with an alternate certification in Social Studies or History will be the most difficult because a lot of those positions are intended for coaches.

I know two people that did it in Cy-Fair, and they got hired right away. Both are elementary teachers, 3rd - 5th grade. But they did it about 6-8 years ago. One had an accounting degree I know, and I think the other one did too, but I'm not 100% sure.

Alief ISD wouldn't hire me as an ACP candidate. This was 5 years ago though.

That's great, for me Cyfair will be the first one that I would try because I am in their district.

I always see that they are looking for more teaching candidates so hopefully things change. What district did you get your start in?
