Iam tired of the housing situation in the San Francisco Bay area and would like to move to a more affordable area. Iam a consultant and hence have no commute issues. Iam looking for an area which is safe and has affordable housing. I have travelled to houston a few times and the sugarland/Katy area was recommended to me. Thanks for your help.

We've lived in Sugar Land a few years now and really enjoy it. Don't have experience with CA, we moved to Houston from Austin.

We moved to Sugar Land from the South Coast of Calif. Housing is WAAAAY more affordable out here than in Coastal Calif. Sugar Land is great. We also looked at homes in Katy. Sugar Land is closer to my Husband's job, so we ended up here. I think Sugar land may have more trees, but Katy is also very nice. I would live either place.

I grew up on the peninsula and never thought I would leave the bay area. My wife and I came to Houston for school. We planned to get our degrees and get out of Texas as quickly as possible. I have to say I have no plans on ever moving back to the bay area. In fact I got into an argument with my family who all live there about just this issue. Texas is an amazing place and of all the cities I have been to Houston is the most like the bay area in terms of culture, food, diversity, sports and other things to do. Also, the weather is mild and awesome in the winter. This Thanksgiving it was in the high 70’s to low 80’s for over a week!

I am also planning to relocate to Sugarland from the bay area but some people told me that the crime rate in Sugarland is climbing and is getting bad. Is that true? Is there area in Sugarland that I should stay away from? Does anybody know whether this has affected the home price in Sugarland? My husband got a job offer in Spring and we are not sure whether we should stay in Sugarland or Spring.

The crime in Sugar Land is not bad at all. I'm not sure why some people are saying that. It's one of the safer areas of the Houston metro. There is one little area of it that's not as good, basically the northern border around an area called Townewest that borders with Houston.
Sugar Land is a wonderful area to live (if you want a master-planned community outside of Houston). It has its own town square, government and everything. It also has zoning (while Houston does not). It recently made #3 on the list of best cities to live in the U.S.
However , if your husband is working in Spring, that is quite a commute from Sugar Land. Though Sugar Land is wonderful, I'd suggest looking at homes closer to his job -- Kingwood, The Woodlands, etc. In my opinion, the biggest thing that ruins one's quality of live in Houston is having a bad commute.

People are saying that because it is true. Sugar Land crime is rising and is coming south (especially in Woodbridge and areas going south). Sugar Land is real close to the high crime spots of Houston. The eastern and northern sides are getting most of the crime now. If I were to live in Sugar Land, I would stay west of First Colony Mall.

All of these cities, and Sugar Land has the lowest crime index.
People who think Sugar Land has a crime problem don't know what they're talking about.

You can nit-pick and find events in the news, but that doesn't change the fact that crime statistics show overall crime in Sugar Land is lower than most other areas of the Houston metro.
