Didn't steal anyone's comments, but seriously miss Texadelphia. We used to go all the time. That was the last staple restaurant I can think of that I truly miss.

Kirby area is losing a lot of our old favorites-Antone's, Texasdelphia and Fu's Garden in the Village. Now 59 Diner.

Many years ago (like 20), the 59 Diner was actually a pretty good place to eat. Fresh food, lots of it, variety, and some great fresh cooked veggies. We ate there every few weeks with our kids. And there was always a line. Always.

Then it started slipping. The fresh veggie selection started slipping, and they would always be out of two or three. Then the menu changed, and several favorites were gone. Fresh veggie choice was 3-4, instead of 6-8. CFS and other staples were clearly Sysco-type heatups, and not fresh made. Crowds started slipping, service wasn't quite so prompt. We would go every few months, just to see if it had got its mojo back. Nope. Months became years, and eventually it was just a restaurant we used to eat at.

I vaguely recall it changed ownership 15+ years ago. Something about Cliff's? It never recovered from that.

RIP 59 Diner. You were the best at what you did once.

I went to three of them and the service was always terrible. The one in Richmond/Rosenberg shut down not too long after they got an F on the health inspection.

While I'm not surprised that 59 Diner went under, I do wish there were more places like this. I love diners and there aren't enough of them in this part of the country.

Try New York Coffee Shop on Hillcroft (near South Braeswood). And be sure to get some bagels from next door.

Yes it wasvery odd...I tried to go a few times about a year ago and the door would be simply locked, no sign...someone at the Stafford site said "they had a kitchen fire" but they never reopened.

I did like the 59 Diner though I didn't go often... they made a great thin pork chop and the ice cream selections were fun... four of shared one of those giant banana splits once. As someone else mentioned, Kirby always seemed to be popular. And I agree with the previous poster that I feel bad for the folks suddenly jobless. The company should have done better by them.
