You are assuming that companies will instantly hire people just because oil goes up (profits increase)
I'm busier than I've ever been in my job, because of all the people that we have lost.

the companies that survive will have cut all the fat they can and will become more "efficient"

when profits come back, they will be used for stock buy-backs, not hiring

When it gets to $60, things will return to normal. That's what they really need.

i'm not so sure the jobs are coming back. even if they were to hire, it would be fewer for sure. it might be more contract work than perm too. the pay would be likely less too.

Houston need more diversity... currently many international big Oil firms are developing alternative energy technology... this is the near term + long term will account for an increasing amount of jobs here in Houston and across the board.

The same thing that happened in the eighties will happen again. There will be fewer young people entering O&G and people will start retiring. Some people will leave O& G for other industries. Then there will be increased competition for those who are left, and then when times are good again more people will enter the field again. This happens over and over again.

Things will run lean for a while, and then the boom times will hit again and then there will be a rush in hiring. It's a boom/bust cycle.

I don't think the effects have really started yet either. Good areas under say $700k are still moving and selling for prices pretty close to what they were 5-6 months ago. There were seemingly buyers that were waiting and they are striking now. It's going to take some more time. But it will happen.

I agree with this - because unlike the eighties, it is much more expensive to hire people direct today with the tons of regulations in play.

All I can say is elections have consequences.

The Great Crew change is coming. The companies that are left will have to start hiring again eventually. By 2018 50% of geophysicist and engineers will be retired.
