I have a home project that will produce some heavy trash and I need to know how to properly dispose of it. It will be mostly wall structure stuff from a 5x5 ft room from demolishing a garage storage room.

Do I need to rent a small dumpster for this?

Depends on your private trash company that your HOA or MUD hired if they accept anything. Mine technically does not accept any construction materials since they deem that your contractor should be disposing of it, but they do take small amounts of carpet if you are changing the floor.

What I do is cut my 2x4s, sheetrock, etc up into small pieces that will fit in a large green trash bag and double bag it, maybe with some other lightweight trash. That way they don't know what is in the bag, and if it is not obviously too heavy, they take it.

The other option is to get one of the Waste Management green plastic Bagster "dumpsters" you can buy at Home Depot or Walmart for $30. Fill it up and then call WM to come pick it up. Edit: Wow, I just looked on the website and pickup charges are high. Like $140 average! http://www.wm.com/residential/bagster-bag.jsp

Good luck!
