Anyone know of a driving route to Denver from Tomball this weekend? We need to avoid areas that may flood (I know, good luck with that). We are scheduled to move out of our apartment on Saturday, 4/30. We're moving ourselves in a U-Haul and, if the weather forecast is right, Tomball could be cut off from routes headed west or north.

I would stay on the interstates to be safe. Houston-> Dallas -> Amarillo -> Pueblo -> Denver.

Great move, Denver is awesome!

I agree. Just moved back to Texas from Denver last summer. It's a great town, and you will love it, especially moving there in time to enjoy the wonderful Summer. I would also recommend the route above. It's pretty isolated between Amarillo and when you hit I-25 in NM, but it's also an amazingly pretty stretch, IMO. I never made the drive in only one day, though. You might want to consider stopping in Trinidad, CO or thereabouts for the night and then the next day, you'll only have about 4-5 hours into Denver. Raton Pass (near Trinidad) is the only place where elevation might be a factor with the U Haul. Make sure you check the weather in case there is snow (and yes, there will be snow events up through Mother's Day most years).

As an alternative, you can go out of Amarillo all the way up 287 just outside Denver, iirc. But, that route has lots of 2 lane only, and a fair amount of truck traffic, according to my husband who went that way once.

Did the same thing last June with a trailer. Just take it slow. Lots of open road, but pretty flat all the way up. Plan your over-night carefully, because options diminish rapidly once a few hours above Amarillo. Stop at the Cadillac Ranch for a great photo-op of the trip.
