Dear all,
I was just wondering if you know of a good tutor who would be willing to train my child for upcoming admission exams to St. John school (middle).
Also, on the same note.
Could you please compare St-John to Memorial Middle/Memorial High.
And Kinkaid to Memorial Middle/Memorial High.
For right now, we are planning only to apply for St. John but still considering Kinkaid (as it is very close to us).
Thank you in advance!

Don't apply to only one private school, unless you really like your zoned public school. It's very competitive to get into both private schools you mentioned.

Check out this site for more information on local private schools.

Maybe I am an outlier, but imo, if your child needs to be tutored to pass the admissions exam to a private school, they probably will not do well at the school unless they are spending a lot of time being tutored during the school year.

You should apply to both Kinkaid and St. John's--especially if you live near Kinkaid. There are very few slots open at the middle school level for either school. It is a crap shoot. Everyone has to have a certain level of intellect. However, once past the threshold, they take legacies, siblings of currently enrolled students, children of teachers/staff members, children of big wigs in town such as Ted Cruz' kids, David Dewhurst's kids, judges' kids, CEO's kids, doctor's kids, athletes already showing exceptional talent, underrepresented minorities etc.--and then they look at everyone else. There are hundreds of really smart kids vying for the few slots.

Memorial HS is much bigger than Kinkaid. Obviously MHS is free, and Kinkaid runs about $26,000/year/kid. The 2017 graduating class at Kinkaid had 139 kids. Of the class this year, 11 are National Merit Scholars, and 11 (not necessarily the same kids) are going to Ivy League schools. Many others are going to top universities. For example, 9 kids are going to Rice. The largest number of Kinkaid graduates go to UT. Kinkaid has an average of 29 composite ACT score, but many kids score higher. St. John's has many more National Merit Scholars than Kinkaid does.

army_knife, the good new is that both Memorial Middle School and Memorial High School are public zoned schools. However you have to live within their attendance boundaries. Do you know which school attendance boundary you live in?

Post above should be ACT composite of 31--my bad. At MHS if you are in the top 8% or so, you get automatic admission to UT or A&M. At Kinkaid and St.John's, lots of kids get in these two schools but not under auto admission because Kinkaid and St. John's do not rank their students.

doesn't top 8% only apply to public schools?

Yes it only applies to public schools. I was addressing OP's wish to compare Memorial HS and privates. Plenty of Kinkaid and St. John's kids get in UT and A & M because of high grades and test scores. They just don;t get the auto admit public schools do.

thank you for your replies. We will try for Kinkaid as well but MMH seems to be on par with Kinkaid and we are zoned to it
