Hello,

I'm in need of some assistance. Next year my boyfriend and I are getting married and instead of spending a lot on our wedding we want to save for our honeymoon and a down payment for a home. Once we have a backyard we want to get three silkie chickens and a duck. The problem is all of the HOAs not allowing poultry. Here are some of the ideas I have right now.

-Try to find an unrestricted home is idea one of course!
-Some HOAs just say farm animals and there might be a pet loophole to go through.
-We might be able to buy a house and then leave that HOA if it allows it in their rules.
-Find a relaxed HOA that wont check and get the chickens anyway as they are a pet breed and pretty quiet.

I want a home in west Houston, preferably close to the cypress, TX area but I can budge on location.

Please if anyone has any helpful information to give it would be greatly appreciated.

-Thank you

It is not near Cypress but there are people in the Heights that have chickens. No HOA here. There is a flock of guinea hens that roams our neighborhood.

Just looked it up! Sounds promising but its such a small area that a home may never be available. I'll keep an eye out though

Chickens are illegal to keep in Houston unless they are 100 feet from the nearest residential structure.

if you don't live in a HOA you're next door neighbors will paint their house neon pink & purple, never mow the lawn, have mules tied to posts in their front yard....trust me an HOA is more important that chickens.
Idk who sent me this reputation message but I know exactly what an HOA does you don't need to tell me. Also I'm the kind of person that would paint my house bright orange and have weird animals so Im not a big fan of tight HOAs. The only things I like HOAs for is keeping front lawns clean but people should be allowed to do whatever they want to their own backyard.

You can not remove a house from a HOA, typically any modification to the HIA/deed restrictions would require 50-80% of all members to vote to approve it so you need to find a place not in city limits and not in HOA, check out in areas like New Caney and Splendora.

Not likely in your search area but we have a great little neighborhood called Spring Hills off Rayford Road near the Woodlands. Zipcode 77386. We are a nice neighborhood with many people who have lived here for 40+ years. We have HOA's all around us but not in our neighborhood with lots of people having chickens with a few people having horses. The lack of an HOA is what attracts most people here.

No, it must be 100' from the neighbors' residential structure. Huge difference.

Yeah, Not many people could manage chickens if it was from any residential structure. Also thank you to everyone for the help so far
