Who cares? Don't we all have perceptions of places we haven't visited? I would say every new city I have visited has surpassed my expectations, with the exception of Los Angeles. From strictly an aesthetic point of view I found it very tired and worn out looking and a huge disappointment.

Speaking of tired and worn out, I am tired of hearing two things about Houston, urban sprawl and McMansions. Most cities seem sprawled out to me. I think Houston gets this rap because initially its suburbs were far flung. I think most of the "sprawl" has filled in and that argument doesn't hold water anymore.

Don't get me started on McMansions. So we can get a lot more home here at less $$$ per sq/ft than most places. Seems pretty much an envy thing to me. Crummy split level up north (I've lived in one) vs. a nice spacious modern home here. Hmmm, tough call. Childish argument.

I know right! Since when is a big home something to sneer at?

When it makes you feel inadequate with your home.

Houston is the best city to live in the country when you don't take weather into account.

Ha, so true.

That said, there does tend to be a pervasive societal assumption that a bigger home is always better. If you're not someone who needs or wants a larger home, I can see why you might get annoyed if people think you're strange for your preferences.

Great thing is, in Houston, you've got plenty of choice in all size ranges.

Big homes on big lots are bad for infrastructure and make public transportation almost impossible to implement, therefore making an area car dependent
