Hello! I am moving from Singapore to Houston in a few months' time with my husband(no kids). I have not been to Houston, and don't know much about Houston at all! His working location is 5656 NORTH SAM HOUSTON PARKWAY EAST SUITE 100.
1) What is a good neighbourhood to live in - safe, accessible, close to work?
2) Which bank account/credit card provides good interest rates/rebates?
3) His company does not provide insurance for spouse. What type of insurance should I get? We are here for at least 2 years - not meant to be permanent.
Thanks so much!

Welcome!
Do you want to buy a house? Lease a house? Consider a condo or apartment? If I were here just two years, I'd probably rent to avoid heavy closing cost fees on both ends...many areas on that side of town would be good for you to consider...
Check with your husband's employer and see if they participate with a federal credit union...those have competitive rates. Other than that, most banks offer incentives for new clients that compete with other banks..some common ones here are Chase, Citibank, and Bank of America.
I can't help much with medical insurance...maybe check out Blue Cross/Blue Shield or United Health Care for individual plans.

You may be able to purchase insurance through your husband's employer. They will usually just deduct the cost from his paycheck.

If you're under 30 and will not be getting pregnant, I'd seriously consider skipping insurance and just put $500 aside each month just in case. Essentially self-insure.

This is assuming you don't plan on getting into any accidents, having traumatic injuries or developing any serious diseases.

What is your housing budget and what kind of area are you looking for? That work location is near 59 and beltway 8 so if you want to live in a suburban area with a short commute your best bet would be Kingwood or Eagle Springs. If you want more of an urban, trendy area but a bit of a longer drive and pricier rent look at The Heights or Midtown.

Here is a $2,000 per month rental in ES, it would be maybe 20 minute commute to work: http://www.har.com/18515-lost-maples/sale_46694468

Of course it does; however, the odds are against it for people in many categories. If she is under 30 and not reckless, odds are ivery high t will pay off.

I would still get high-deductible insurance that will take care of any major health disasters that can strike even the most cautious. It's basically self-insuring while still having catastrophic coverage.

The problem is thanks to Obamacare insurance is required to cover so much now there are no cheap catastrophic plans like you used to be able to get.

Oh, OK, didn't realize that. I had a high-deductible plan several years ago, was the best option for me (was healthy and in my late 30s).
