Hello!
What are everyone's thoughts on living near the railroad tracks in Bellaire and West U (and anywhere in Houston for that matter)? We're considering noise and also safety for children. I don't have children yet but wouldn't want my future kids wandering away. Noise I'm hoping won't be an issue since my wife and I are heavy sleepers. Anyone have any experience living in Bellaire on the block closest to the railroad tracks or on Community Drive in West U/ Would it be better to have the tracks behind you in West U or intersecting you a few houses down from you in Bellaire?
Would love your opinions.

I live 30 large city blocks or more north from the tracks on US 90 that are south of westbury. i can hear the train even after they quit blowing their horns due to the noise ban. For construction or safety they are able to still blow the whistle. That is pretty damn loud even from my house

Without the whistle is a audible mechanical hum. Doesnt bother me anymore but people staying over always ask what the noise is at night.

Trains are way way louder than you think even just rustling by. Another home in west u or bellaire will come up for sale that looks just as nice than one by the tracks

We've lived near noisy things before and you mostly get used to it. If it's an older home, you may have more of an issue with it.

It's noisy and will vibrate the house.

You'll get used to it, more than likely, but I think it affects resale.

No way you get used to the sound of a train next to your window. You settle to deal with it. Thats a big difference

We have a couple of friends who live on Community. Living on that street wouldn't have been their first choice, but it allowed them the house they want at the price they could afford. IMO, spending that much money and having a train behind you doesn't make sense, not when there are plenty of similarly-priced homes in proximity (maybe just not with the cache of being in West U proper).

Their house is new and on pier and beam. You can FEEL the rumble, regardless of the speed of the train. Yes, you get used to it, but being in their backyard is definitely less relaxing because of it.

Had a friend that lived on Community in West U years ago (right adjacent to the train tracks). Said the most difficult thing was talking on the phone when a train goes by - had a hard time hearing the person on the other end, but also, the person he was talking to had trouble hearing him over the train. Became awkward when he was on business calls at his house.

He claimed everything else he got used to. It was an older house.

You definitely get used to it. it's not like living under the flight path by an airport. I lived with my bedroom less than 100 feet from a train track. I can't even remember any distinct times where I can remember hearing it thinking back about it now. It's only a few times per day and you probably won't even be at home for half of those times.
