A friend of mine has a date in the Heights and he asked about restaurant options.

He is looking for a nice restaurant ($40 entrees) but not super crazy.

Anyone have a suggestion?

Ooh!! There are two right across from each other that looked really nice!
Check reviews for Rainbow House, Shade, and Down House...I trust Trip Advisor reviews!

I think perhaps you mean Rainbow Lodge?? Yes, it's pretty solid, although I have only gone there for Brunch (and am still sad it moved from its old location next to Bayou Bend). Rainbow Lodge has always been known for its wild game, so tell him to make sure his date is not a vegetarian, LOL. Shade used to be fairly good, though not sure about it now. I also like Liberty Kitchen on Studemont and 11th.

I wouldn't say Shade or Liberty are in the $40 entree type range for quality, but certainly $25-$30.

Bernadine's is nice. Great date vibe.

Rainbow Lodge is technically in Shady Acres and not The Heights but good food, highly recommend.

Coltivare on White Oak is really good, but get there at 5 or you may have to wait. Eight Row Flint for a quick casual taco. The other mentioned previously are good too. Skip Cane Rosso, I wasn't impressed. Coltivare has much better pizza. Another option is Nundini, off of Shepherd, South of the bridge and North of I-10.

Oh yes! Rainbow Lodge, it just looks really cool (ambience) but it would depend on the vibe you're going for...it would definitely impress but also give the vibe that you're interested in more than a friendship...if he's not quite sure on that end, pick a more neutral ambience

Coltivare has some of the best food and drinks in town, but it does not take reservations, and is always super busy, noisy and crowded. That said, the pizzas pastas and appetizers are to die for. Parking is also difficult. If you are looking for a quiet romantic vibe avoid Coltivare.
