International steel giant expands in Baytown increasing Greater Houston's economic diversity..

BAYTOWN, Texas (KTRK) --
India has the seventh largest economy in the world, growing more than twice as quickly as the United States.

While Texans were sleeping Sunday night, the country's biggest steel producer increased its investment in the Lone Star State.

"Today we are launching our project in Baytown, Texas," announced Sajjan Jindal, of conglomerate JSW Group.

From more than 10,000 miles away, JSW announced plans to put in $500 million into its Baytown steel plant over the next two years.

Gov. Greg Abbott announced the expansion plans alongside executives of parent company JSW Group, which is based in India, where the governor is on a weeklong trip to discuss trade. Abbott said the new jobs in Baytown will command an average salary of $65,000 and expand the workforce there to about 1,000, with the mill filling hundreds more contract positions during a two-year project.

The mill already supplies plate for oil and gas pipes, ships and giant wind turbine towers. The multimillion-dollar upgrade will allow it to also supply government agencies like the military.

“We are going to make history here in Baytown,” said Hritz, who began his steel career in Youngstown, Ohio. “We don’t have to worry about the imports coming in because we will be able to beat them at their own game.”

We're posting about Medical venture capital in Houston, and Rice universities plans for the iconic Sears building in Midtown. Both adding to Houston's economic diversity.

Health-care companies got most venture funds in Houston in Q1

When locally based medical device company Procyrion announced a $16 million venture-capital deal in January, it marked a milestone not just for the startup but for Houston as well.

Venture-capital funding in Houston largely went to health-care companies in the first quarter of 2018, with the Procyrion deal ranked as the second-largest investment, a new report by the PricewaterhouseCooper and CB Insights firms shows.

Houston companies claimed a total of $47.8 million in venture funds in the first quarter, a 47 percent increase from the same period a year earlier. There were a nine local deals in each of those two quarters.

Out with the old, in with the new. The brand new — and high tech. The iconic midtown Sears building is set to become the hub of Houston’s new innovation district, a land geared around startups and tech.
Who needs Amazon when you have Houston talent and trailblazers waiting in the wings?

In the wake of Amazon rejecting Houston relatively early in its search for its coveted second headquarters, Rice University president David Leebron and Houston Mayor Sylvester Turner revealed the plans for a new $100 million Midtown Innovation District at a press conference held in the 1939 Art Deco building at 4201 Main that long housed a Sears. The two were joined by Texas Medical Center president and CEO Bill McKeon and Station Houston co-founder and CEO John Reale Jr.

“The innovation district will leverage the region’s unique economic strengths and help transform Houston into a world leader in data science and digital technologies centered on energy, industrial, health care and logistics industries,” Leebron said.

A new collaborative medical innovation campus at the TMC adding to Houston's economic diversity!
Houston Gets a New High-Tech Medical Innovation Center With Its Own Sprawling Park

Rare Collaboration to Drive Biomedical Breakthroughs

BY Annie Gallay // 04.23.18

An ambitious new 30-acre collaborative research campus is headed to the Texas Medical Center — and it brings futuristic visions of life-changing discoveries. The cutting-edge project aims to set Houston up as a champion of new biomedical breakthroughs.

Like other medical-centered cities, Houston is getting in on the “clustering” model.
Five institutions —Texas Medical Center, Baylor College of Medicine, Texas A&M University Health Science Center, University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston and University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center — are combining forces on the new TMC3. The new research campus is geared around fostering innovation, forming a much-needed physical bridge between Houston’s clinical and research hubs.

https://www.papercitymag.com/culture...illion/#149908

The Texas Medical Center Corp., which operates the largest medical center in the world, has unveiled an updated timeline on its potentially $1.5 billion expansion for its newest campus.

Groundbreaking for TMC3, the new campus, is expected to begin in 2019 with completion slated for 2022. The collaborative research campus is expected to involve five founding institutions as medical centers across the world continue to seek collaboration between major corporations and research universities.

The new campus alone is expected to have a $5.2 billion impact on the city of Houston and create a projected 30,000 new jobs. The campus is located south of TMC's current footprint in what is now mostly a parking lot between Old Spanish Trail and South Braeswood Boulevard.

"This project itself, I think, is one of the most transformational things that will ever happen to the Texas Medical Center," said Bill McKeon, president and CEO of TMC. "This will really set the cornerstone of how we do things in the future."

Houston's critical mass is becoming large enough that firms have to open a local/regional office to offer their services. The days of being serviced from Dallas, Atlanta, Miami (and in some cases Chicago and Los Angeles) are numbered.
