“Apple had told us ahead of time that we were crazy for charging that much,” said Adam Houghton, principal and executive vice president of engineering, “… and we’ve been able to build a successful business off of it.”

Revenue rose into the millions of dollars. Pilots using the app on Sunday flights began taking it to work, expanding ForeFlight’s reach into flight schools, military aircraft and more than 1,700 corporate flight departments and other larger operators.

The company grew from roughly a dozen employees in 2010 to some 180. Though headquarters are in Houston, ForeFlight’s largest office is in Austin. A mapping team works from Portland, Maine, and a flight planning team works from Odense, Denmark.

Houston, Texas Office

Corporate Headquarters

Our recently expanded more than 10,000 sq ft office sits near the historic River Oaks neighborhood with panoramic views of the Houston skyline. It's a vibrant and tech-driven city, home to NASA and over 20 Fortune 500 companies. You can't get bored in Houston. It has one of the world’s best food scenes, and lively arts and entertainment districts mean a festival, concert or local farmers’ market is always close.

We are updating this post from August 2018.

Boeing acquires ForeFlight

The airliner manufacturer announced March 6 that it had acquired Houston-based ForeFlight. Previously privately held, ForeFlight is believed to be the largest player in the electronic flight bag app business. The company teamed with Boeing-owned Jeppesen in 2016 to incorporate Jeppesen terminal and en route charts as an option in ForeFlight. ForeFlight was also working with Jeppesen’s FliteDeck Pro app team to bring new features to that product.

He said the entire leadership team and all of the 180 employees are involved in the transition and that ForeFlight is continuing to hire and is expanding its office space in Texas and in Denmark

In the video contained in the link co-founder Tyson Weihs specifically says they are continuing plans for office expansions in both Austin and Houston.

Houston's emergence as a life science cluster is driving employment and development , helping to diversify the Greater Houston economy.

Houston is leading the country as a top emerging life sciences cluster, the CBRE report said. The Texas Medical Center, Houston's high number of life science doctorates and the city's substantive and growing life science workforce made it second only to Seattle as an emerging hub for life sciences.

Houston's life sciences employment grew by almost 14 percent between 2014 and 2017, the report found. The burgeoning sector has driven real estate development, including a recently announced 48-story tower that is focusing on the needs of life science and venture capital tenants.

Jumping in

Among those seeking to take advantage is Houston’s Medistar, which last month announced it would start construction in the third quarter on a 476,500-square-foot, 48-story tower on Main Street in the Medical Center. Transwestern’s Justin Brasell, who specializes in healthcare advisory services and is leasing the building, says the Medical Center’s concentration of talent and investment is driving demand for life science facilities.

We have two instances where renovated historic buildings, and Tech are coming together to help diversify the Greater Houston economy.

First ,

Two cutting-edge technology firms have claimed the creative office space in downtown's historic Main&Co redevelopment, developer NewForm Real Estate announced.
Ruths.ai relocated its downtown Houston office to 8,457 square feet. The company provides an integrated analytics platform for oil and gas clients. UiPath, a global robotics process automation firm, leased 5,187 square feet to house a Houston team. The companies moved in last month.
The offices, on Main Street near Commerce along the Metro Rail line, have original exposed brick walls and ceiling beams, refinished hardwood floors, stainless-steel kitchens and private bathrooms

Second, Rice University has announced plans and scheduled a start date for the Ion renovation of the old Sears building in Midtown.

The long-awaited renovation of the historic Sears building on Houston’s Main Street will begin in May 2019, launching the project that will transform a local landmark into the centerpiece of a thriving innovation district.

The renovated building will be rechristened as The Ion, a 270,000-square foot structure designed to bring the area’s entrepreneurial, corporate and academic communities together into collaborative spaces and programs. The former Sears Building will support businesses at all stages of the innovation lifecycle and provide resources for Houstonians seeking to participate in the innovation economy. Academic and corporate partners will be integrated into a robust environment of educational events, demonstrations, hack-a-thons and programming. A mix of restaurant and entertainment amenities will make the building a continuous hive of collaboration and activity.
Transformation of Sears building into The Ion begins in May

The "program" here is as useless as **** on a bull, much like the knuckledragging Lege here that has no intention of allowing one that isn't.

It's a factor (not the, but a) in why I'm not staying here. Vote with your feet and all.

Green "biochemicals", from medical uses, to cleaning up grease and wastewater, to helping etch circuit boards, are also helping to diversify the economy of Greater Houston.

His initial focus was understanding how cancer cells make hydrogen peroxide to mutate their DNA and survive attacks from the body’s immune system. But upon discovering the protein, Chakrabarti recognized the chemical’s positive uses. It prevents infection on a scraped knee, cleans up grease, helps etch printed circuit boards and kills bacteria on fruits and vegetables.

Its ability to clean wastewater from hydraulic fracturing could be the most popular use in Texas, a proposition that has helped Houston-based Solugen raise nearly $20 million from investors in Silicon Valley.
