Amazon to hire more than 150 as it expands Houston tech hub

Retail giant Amazon said Thursday that it would expand its web-based Houston tech hub, creating more than 150 corporate and tech jobs here.
The company said the new jobs would help support the cloud computing-related Amazon Web Services team. Among the new jobs would be positions for cloud application architects, software development engineers for the energy industry and principal data scientists, among others.

Amazon has leased 26,000 square feet of space along Houston's Energy Corridor to accommodate the tech hub workers.

“Thanks to Houston’s incredible talent pipeline, we’re able to bring 150 new jobs to the city, on top of the more than 300 technology and corporate roles we’ve already created,” said Scott Bends, site lead for Amazon’s Houston Tech Hub. “We’re excited to continue working with the community and local leaders as we invest in Houston, bringing more jobs and new economic opportunity to the area.”

Saw this earlier. I grew up on Logan’s Roadhouse when I lived in Louisiana for a few years. Too bad they don’t have any of their locations in Houston. Hopefully they’ll open one for nostalgic purposes now that their home offices are here.

They've had locations here. I don't know if they still do. There was one on SH 6 near my house, but it closed, as have many restaurants on that road.

Saltgrass is king here that could be part of the reason they don’t do well here. I wonder if they’ll try to open up here now that Houston is their new home. Good luck competing with Saltgrass.

Good to see Amazon growing their presence here relatively fast. They opened in 2019 with 150 initial employees and are nearing 500 since. With their expansion, they have the potential to go beyond that. We low key have had a lot of relocations and branch expansions from the west coast recently. But to see one of the big 5 not names Microsoft set up here makes a statement.

I agree Saltgrass is king in Houston, but Texas Roadhouse and Longhorn Steakhouse have managed to survive.

Today we post on 2 companies delivering economic diversity to the greater Houston economy. One by expanding their Houston hub at IAH and the other by taking a stake in a German renewable energy outfit.

United Airlines buy 500 planes, bring thousands of jobs to Houston

United Airlines is expanding its fleet amid rebounding travel demand as part of a plan that will bring 25,000 jobs to its hubs across the nation, including 3,000 in Houston.
The Chicago-based airline said in a Tuesday announcement that it would buy 500 new planes, including 200 Boeing 737 Max and 70 Airbus 321neos, by 2026 and retire around 300 planes that were reaching the end of their useful life.

United plans to offer around 470 daily departures from Bush Intercontinental Airport next month, still down from the roughly 500 before the pandemic started, Nocella said. The expansion will allow the carrier to move that number to at least 600 a day, he said.

Houston is an important hub for United, he said, as it provides it access to destinations in Mexico and Latin America.
United has a terminal redevelopment project underway at IAH and is also working with Houston Airport System to redesign its ticketing lobby in Terminal C to include new security checkpoints and a check-in location. United said it is also constructing a new baggage handling system and baggage storage facility at IAH, at a combined investment of around $300 million.

Baker Hughes takes a stake in synthetic natural-gas startup

Baker Hughes is taking a 15 percent stake in a startup that aims to produce natural gas from hydrogen and carbon dioxide, the oilfield service company’s latest move to invest technology designed to capture emissions.

Houston-based Baker Hughes is investing in Electrochaea GmbH, a German company developing a process to make so-called synthetic natural gas from carbon dioxide and from hydrogen produced using renewable energy, according to a statement.

Financial terms weren’t disclosed. The CO2 can be derived from sources including industrial plants and the breakdown of organic matter.

The investment is the latest example of an oilfield service provider backing technology intended to address concerns about greenhouse gas emissions. Earlier this month, Baker Hughes announced plans to develop a hub in Norway to capture and store CO2.
