Passed over sugar land and noticed the Minute Maid sign at the sugar land town center is now Coca Cola sign. Wonder what that’s about.

HOUSTON — Coca-Cola Southwest Beverages (CCSWB), a Dallas-based subsidiary of Mexican Coca-Cola bottler Arca Continental, is breaking ground today on its new $250 million production and distribution facility in Houston. The new facility will be the first new Coca-Cola plant built in the United States in a decade.

Situated within Pinto Business Park, the 1 million-square-foot facility will include manufacturing with five new production lines, distribution, warehouse and sales. Pinto Business Park is a Hines-owned campus spanning 971 acres in northwest Houston.

Coca Cola moved MM's HQ to Atlanta not long ago. I guess they felt it was more appropriate now to show that office as a regional Coca Cola location rather than MM, though I would assume most working in there are working in the MM division.

Yes that’s why it confused me. From my understanding, Original plans were to close that location as a whole. But that was all done during the peak of COVID-19 so it’s possible that as things eased plans changed.

Gravity Global marketing agency sets up U.S. HQ in Houston with acquisition

A unit of Houston-based marketing agency 9thWonder has joined with London-based Gravity Global as part of the business-to-business marketing agency's expansion in the U.S.

Gravity Global, whose clients including the Boston industrial conglomerate General Electric and the Dutch multinational AkzoNobel, said Wednesday it acquired both 9thWonder B2B, the Houston agency’s business-to-business unit, and Minneapolis-based creative agency Morsekode. Terms were not disclosed.

Gravity Global, which operates in several countries, has partnered with 9thWonder and Morsecode on projects for years. As part of the transaction, Jose Lozano, who founded 9thWonder by acquiring and integrating six agencies in 2018, becomes the U.S. CEO of Gravity Global, based in Houston. Gravity Global’s top clients include the Texas refiners Phillips 66 and Motiva, the Minnesota conglomerate 3M and the financial services firm Ameriprise Financial.

Thirty employees from the business-to-business side of 9thWonder will move to Gravity Global. About 250 employees will remain at 9thWonder on the agency’s consumer side, which promotes clients such as automakers Honda and Ford. Lozano serves as chairman at 9thWonder.

The agency expects to double in size this year from current levels of more than 250 people and $40 million in fees.

Japanese manufacturer a step closer to moving US HQ from Tennessee to Katy area

Japanese compressor manufacturer Mayekawa is closer to moving its U.S. headquarters to Waller County from the Nashville, Tennessee, area.

The company and the Waller County Economic Development Partnership recently finalized an incentives package, which still has to be approved by the county’s commissioners court, according to EDP Executive Director Vince Yokum.

Once that is done, Mayekawa plans to occupy a 72,000-square-foot facility that Houston-based Clay Development & Construction is currently building next to the new Medline distribution center. It's in the Pederson Road Business Park between Interstate 10 and U.S. Highway 90 in the Katy area near Brookshire.

The company should be in the facility by mid-summer, "depending on the delivery of key equipment." according to Mayekawa USA CFO Jim Stoll, and be fully operational by the end of the year.

“They’re a great company,” Yokum said. “They work in a variety of industries; they are the essence of a diverse company. And so, they would be a great addition to the corporate citizens out here.”

Yokum did not disclose details of the tax abatement agreement but said Mayekawa will be required to create 68 local jobs with an average annual salary of $83,000.

Positions will include skilled trades such as welders, electricians and pipe fitters as well as accounting, purchasing, drafting and engineering jobs, Stoll said. Of the estimated 68 positions, about 15 are expected to relocate from Tennessee and California, he said.

Mayekawa will also retain the current 15 jobs at its sales and engineering office in west Houston.

Houston Spaceport, enabling hypersonic flight and economic diversity for the Greater Houston economy.

A hypersonic plane? Houston company seeks to fly from Los Angeles to Tokyo in 1 hour

Venus Aerospace, a Houston company developing a spaceplane that could fly passengers from Los Angeles to Tokyo in one hour, has raised $20 million, the company announced Tuesday.

This brings its total fundraising to $33 million.

"In the past year, with our initial funding, we have scaled from three people to 40. These are the world’s best rocket scientists, engineers and operators,” Sassie Duggleby, CEO of Venus Aerospace, said in a news release. “With this funding, we will continue to push forward toward our next technical milestones, hire great people and scale our organization."

Its recent round of funding was led by Prime Movers Lab, which invests in breakthrough scientific companies. Venus Aerospace will use this money to mature its rocket engine, aircraft shape and leading-edge cooling, which allows the spaceplane to take off from spaceports like the Houston Spaceport.

Local telecom start-up working out of a Midtown garage is developing new 5G technology and helping to diversify the Greater Houston economy.

Skylark Wireless to hire, expand manufacturing capabilities ahead of wider commercial rollout

A local startup is scaling up for commercial sales of its 5G wireless network technology, which has caught the attention of internet service providers and the defense sector.

Ryan Guerra, co-founder and CEO of Skylark Wireless, said the company's technology is being used to expand broadband internet access in places that have historically lacked reliable connectivity. After being born out of Rice University, Skylark focused on early-stage adopters of its technology, like the military. While Skylark's work for the military continues, the company is also doubling down on its commercial sales efforts.

Houston-based Skylark Wireless develops wireless technology that transmits data across vacant frequencies typically used by broadcast television stations. Using proprietary massive multiple input, multiple output (MIMO) technologies, Skylark's software-defined radio systems can connect users over 1,000 square miles from a single tower.

With a team of 26 full- and part-time employees, Skylark is also bursting at the seams of its Midtown-area townhome headquarters, Guerra said. The company is looking at a larger commercial office space in Houston to house its growing team. Skylark is looking to add more team members to its sales and support teams as the company installs more and more units in the field.
