I am partially writing this in response to a recent thread titled "The Hoods". I was very surprised reading the conversation, with most people saying "Houston doesn't have dangerous ghettos such as a NYC or Chicago". Or "Houston isn't as dangerous". To my surprise, NYC and Chicago were popular there.

This, however, is the truth. Neighborhood scout runs a study every now and then on the top 25 most dangerous neighborhoods in USA, and is the last results, a Houston neighborhood was found in second. To be exact, Scott St @ Wilmington. For those that are unfamiliar, this is the Sunnyside neighborhood. The truth on "Houston ghettos" is this. Houston has a 991 violent crime rate and a 10.9 murder rate. While these numbers aren't the highest in the nation, they are by no circumstance low either. What happens in Houston is that if you are in a safe area, you are extremely safe. But walking into a "ghetto" you have no where near the amount of safety that you do walking a safe street.

If you want a comparison, Houston has a higher violent crime rate than both Chicago and NYC. Chicago did have a higher murder rate, however, at 15.1. Neither Houston, Chicago or NYC can compare to crime or murder rates such as Baltimore, St Louis, New Orleans or Detroit. However, these cities have an overall high crime rate. Houston has neighborhoods worse than a bad neighborhood in New Orleans or Detroit, etc. But it also has plenty of safe areas to make up for it.

Sunnyside is dangerous but unlike some other neighborhoods of Houston that are dangerous, it's pretty impossible to unintentionally drive into Sunnyside from some other relatively safe neighborhood (the most likely way this happens is if you are at TSU/UH and happen to make a couple wrong turns somewhere), and there is absolutely no good reason for someone that isn't looking for trouble to venture into it.

It's violence is basically self contained.

Some of the criminal element does make it's way down Cullen into Pearland to commit crime, that's kind of gone down as well over time.

Fondren SW/Alief/SWAT I think you're right but it's arguable it is about the same level of bad as Sunnyside. Acres Homes is still bad in parts but overall has gotten much nicer due to the recent bouts of gentrification starting to reach up to its' southern edges near TC Jester Park. I wouldn't put Acres Homes in quite the same category as the other 2, and in all likelihood that trend will continue for it once the next boom rolls around.

I did a Google Maps look - that area seems to have been redeveloped. Did they get old data? Also...

The Travis Street and Elgin Street neighborhood, which is located in Midtown Houston, is seen as a sketchy area. Violent assaults, thefts, and robberies are common here, and the neighborhood stands in sharp contrast to other areas of Midtown that have experienced revitalization. Travis and Elgin Streets are bordered by Gulf Freeway and Main Street, and the neighborhood is in an area that’s being gentrified. However, all of the benefits of the new developments haven’t made it over to this neighborhood yet. It also has very poorly rated public schools.
It is zoned to Gregory Lincoln for K-8 and Lamar for high school. I don't think Gregory Lincoln, while not a "great" school, is the worst in the city.
