I am moving to Houston with my wife and need help/suggestion on areas, apartments to live in. I dnt have car so will be dependent on public transportation mainly. Area where we can have nearby( walk-able ) Walmart, Indian stores. My office location would be 1600, Smith Street, UH-Downton.

What is your price range. I would say Midtown but there is not a Walmart or Indian store near. You could take the train easily.

Keep in mind Houston is HUGE. It can take 1.5 hours to drive across. The public transportation is pretty terrible and owning a car is pretty much a must.

With no car you are going to have to live in midtown and do a 15-20 minute walk (or could ride a bike maybe?) to work. Or on a bus line that will take you downtown or close to the Metro Rail that will drop you in downtown.

The Metro Rail Red Line does stop downtown near 1600 Smith. Just jump off at the Bell Station and 1600 Smith building is only 4 streets over, and Metro Rail Red Line stops at UH Downtown. I would look at someplace that's a quick walk to a Metro Rail on the Red Line. I would look around Herman Park/Medical Center. That's just me if I had no car and worked downtown. There won't be a Wal Mart or a Indian Store (that I know of) but the headache of getting to work and UH Downtown would be minimal and that's you biggest hurdle in Houston with no car. Or just live in a Condo in midtown as close as possible to work and just walk.

What is the average price range for a 1BR condo or apartment in midtown. Also is there any option of furnished 1BR condo in midtown and how much for the rent to it..

If its midtown could you suggest any of the buildings , closed surrounding apartments in that area.

Around Eldridge parkway..You have buses to downtown and a Kroger and Indian shops nearby.

Or Hillcroft . You have direct buses to downtown (81,82) and a lots of Indian restaurants and groceries. Rates around 1000.

If you won't need to visit Indian stores every day, live in Midtown for ease of work commute, either rail or bus. There is a fast bus (153) from the Wheeler Transit Center in Midtown to the Hillcroft Transit Center, adjacent to the Mahatma Ghandi District where the Indian stores cluster. The schedule says it's just a 15 minute trip.

I don't know of an Indian store inside the loop, but there is a Target in the Med Center. It's bikeable from the rail line or the Brays Bayou trails. Personally, I also prefer Hermann Park area over Midtown. But midtown has a lot of bars and restaurants in walking distance. If your budget is tight there are some apartments right across from the Stadium rail stop. I know someone who works at UH downtown and he says they are decent.
