Hi guys,

i'm new in this Forum and i'd like to have some suggestion about the area. I never been in the States but my company has assigned me for a job there.

I possibly have to choose to FIFO or relocate somewhere around Freeport. I use to travel around the world and working overseas, i just spent 3 years in Australia.

Well no much to ask but which area would you suggest to live in?

I'm a sport person and i'm willing to join some people or groups to play with ( basketball would be ideal).

By the way my name is Nicola 29 yo Italian boy.

Up for any kind of suggestion!!!

Cheers

Lake Jackson is probably the best, maybe the only choice that doesn't involve a long commute.

They have some adult sports leagues there, Softball, running, Soccer, Triathletes, learn more here:

There is/was someone trying to start a basketball league down there, called the Lake Jackson Ballers, not sure how that turned out.

There's not much going on in Freeport itself. It's a very industrial area. My buddy use to work at the Dow Chemical plant down there. He commuted from Pearland. If you want to be close to civilization Pearland is a safe choice. It's about a 45 minute commute to Freeport however. Fortunately there was no stop and go traffic so that's a plus. Pearland is also a about 15 to 20 minute drive into Houston.

Based on your international background, and having lived in Australia, I'd avoid living in Freeport. Maybe Lake Jackson, Angleton, or Brazoria to avoid a long commute. If those don't look good, maybe go try farther away such as Galveston, Hitchcock, Sante Fe, or Alvin. Use Google to calculate driving distance.

You might want to look for pictures online of each town to get a feel for how they look, and check Wikipedia to look at city statistics and history. Their won't be much culture in any of those towns except for Galveston, which does have international influences.

You probably know that public transportation is sadly lacking in this part of the U.S. so you'll definitely need a car. Lake Jackson and Freeport are adjacent towns. Check out the various Lake Jackson TX websites for activities and amenities. You might get a short term lease on an apartment in LJ so you can investigate the various areas and decide where you want to live.

Well first of all thanks to everybody for those hints.....

Luckily my company will pay for a personal car and accommodation so houses and transportation won't be a problem at all.

The main reason why I'm posting this is that can't spend much looking for the house ( i could stay in hotel for a month and look around) but then if I want to relocate with my GF I need to choose the best spot where she can be safe and easily move around while I'm working ( Pls far from shopping center, otherwise I have to make sure I don't leave my wallet at home lol ).

Joking apart, I really would have some area where i can move around playing some sports and have an easy life.

Freeport is an industrial town/complex about an hour south of metro Houston. Housing will be cheaper there, but the amenities will not be 'big city'.
