As all know, Houston has a franchise in all major sport leagues excepr the NHL. The Rockets (NBA), Astros (MLB), Texans (NFL), and the Dynamo (MLS) and that just leaves an empty space for NHL. There's currently a lot of fan pages circling around trying to bring the NHL to Houston.

Here's a little background on NHL in Houston. We have an NHL-ready arena in the Toyota Center. The problem is that Leslie Alexander owns the sole rights to any franchise that operates in there, so he would have to either be the owner, or would have to lease it to the investor, which he doesn't want to do, because after the NHL rejected a deal he tried doing, he basically said "forget it, I don't want anything to do with hockey" and then he kicked the successful Aeros out as well.

So Houston, how good would an NHL franchise do in this city? And what are the chances of landing one?

Until Les says yes, there will be zero chance a franchise will come here.

It won't do well, as it doesn't involve a pointy ball with stripes, and this is a horrible bandwagon city that won't support anything other than football at a significant level until there's a sniff of a title. If a team came, it wouldn't be a contender. You'd have a version of Atlanta 3.0. Plus the Les issue on top of that.

Default Aeros

We could not even keep the Aeros in town, and admittedly, I only went to games because my company gave me free tickets... that they could not give away. Sad, but true. Houston is not a Hockey town.

Actually the Aeros had among the best attendance in the AHL. The stadium was far outsized for what it needed. They left because Les killed their lease, not because they wanted to go.

My mom's company gave her free tickets and she gave them to me. It was so empty in there. Very depressing. It was fun to watch but I felt so bad for the players playing in there. I've seen more people at high school football games.

Instead of focusing on creating an NHL team the city should do all they can to build a larger following for the Dynamo. That's where the biggest potential would be.

Houston supported the AHL pretty well. They got a way better Stadium deal to move to Iowa. It was 20k less per game to play in Iowa.

It sure didn't look well supported when I went there. More than half of the stadium was empty.
