The University of Houston is starting to spur development of off-campus housing developments nearby the school. This is The Icon:

Note the presence of street-front retail, direct connection to the light-rail, as well as overall lack of catering to the car.

I'd like to see UH throw up a university-controlled apartment complex for older students and families. Apparently they were planning to build one along the Brays Bayou or something.

Do you guys think UH should build a family housing complex close to campus but have the apartments zoned to schools that are not as good.... or should buy an apartment complex in the Museum District area along the METRO bus lines that is further from campus but is zoned to better schools?

They said they were going to work with HISD schools in their area to improve their performance, so maybe that is part of a bigger plan. Improve the local schools and build family oriented housing for their older more establish students zoned to those HISD schools..

Did they specify which ones? I'd like to read more about this!

Also I am aware UH has a laboratory school but it only covers elementary grades.

It seems there are 6 of them although they are not specifically listed.

Khator said UH can play a role in supporting education, health, arts and economic development in the Third Ward.

UH plans to help six nearby Houston Independent School District schools meet and then beat state academic averages, she said. The university's Bauer College of Business wants to help support 25 new entrepreneurial ventures in the next five years.

Finally! I was wondering when the University was going to help out in the surrounding neighborhood. The housing in the area and neighborhood conditions are not suitable for professors or students. Calhoun Lofts is the nicest around campus, but some people considering that place would rather live in the (western) inner loop between Downtown and the Galleria area instead, which is pretty close to campus by most urban standards.

On my way to Galveston, I spotted some new houses along I-45 and Scott built on what were once empty lots or run down shotgun housing. Looks the seeds of revitalizing the University Park area are spouting!

The best situation would be commuting back-and-forth. The freshman dorms aren't too shabby though with the renovations being done.
