We are looking to move into one of these places to raise a family. The reason for the two is because my wife said we need to move to Texas City because her family lives there and try's to tell me it's a little nicer. I say Sugar Land because it's closer to my job and it seems like a good place to raise a family, but I do not know.

We won't be moving until May, but she is dead set on Texas City for the reasons stated above and many more.

Which place is better all around based on your experiences?

Sugar Land...no question.

I won't claim to know much about Texas City, but I've never heard anyone claim that it is nicer than Sugar Land (or really any Houston suburb). I hope you realize that Texas City to Sugar Land is approx 50-60 miles, which means an hour without traffic (and tolls).

To put on my advice columnist hat for a moment, I'm guessing your wife just wants to be close to family. Nothing wrong with that, but you should weigh that with a really long daily commute or having a shorter commute and easily being able to visit the family on the weekend or whenever. You can also try renting in both places to get a feel for it.

If you really need to be close to Texas City try League City instead. Texas City is a refinery town that is developing some nicer areas because of a Petrochemical expansion in the area, so it is growing, but it is still a refinery town. League City is closer to downtown Houston in the Clear Lake (NASA) area and is a short drive to Texas City. Just my 2 cents....

Its difficult to imagine two places as different from each other as are Sugar Land and Texas City. Think upscale suburban for Sugar Land and gritty industrial on the water for a good part of Texas City)

Its difficult to imagine commuting to anywhere near Sugar Land from Texas City.

If you haven't already done so, you need to come down here and see for yourself.

The two share basically zero in common aside from both being in the general Houston metro area. You probably need to put together a list of priorities and desires in a place to live as well as a budget and go from there.

Been in both places. While TX City is a poor, industrial town with nothing much going on, its closer to the sea. Schools and the homes around the schools look terrible. And definitely shouldn't have great ratings too compared to Fort Bend ISD.

Your wife is right. A nice park along the sea , a mile long dyke were nice to freshen up . May be it will be a good trip every weekend to visit their family and dine in a few good restaurants . Drive few miles up to League city, you could find activities for kids.

I say this not because Sugarland is any good, but because the commute will kill you in the longer run. I commute from Memorial area to TX City daily and it is indeed depressing , especially in the evenings. But still doable. You can still take TX-6 upto Sugarland which is fairly breezy, but it will be a good 45-1Hr ride every day. You could still unwind along the sea every day. The best tourist spot of Houston, Galveston is in your backyard.

I would prefer anything near the sea any day compared to Sugarland or Katy or any hyped suburb. You dont have to sacrifice everything just for schools IMO. Whatever "fine dining" options you have in Sugarland, you got them in League city alongside the 45.

Depends on your finances also. If you are well to do, have money to buy a boat, fishing etc, have a family near by , then I would say go for it. You could try living there and see how you like it. You will be connected to nature much more than living inside Houston.

I second the League City suggestion by way of compromise. Texas City has gotten "nicer" (but only if you are comparing it to itself before about 5-10 years ago). League City, OTOH, is nice, has good schools, and is in close proximity to water....while still being close to her family.

However, if you work in Sugar Land and have to commute, and she does not work/commute, then your desired location absolutely gets priority, IMO.
