Good or bad idea in the Houston area?

I am thinking that in the hot months this could create a mosquito problem.

Anyone own a home that backs right up to a lake?

Mosquitoes seem to like more swampy area than lakes.

Additionally, if the lake creates an open area for a breeze, that reduces mosquitoes.

My Dad has a home that is on a small lake/retention pond. Not sure if he has mosquito problems, but I do know that his backyard is extremely windy (though it got better when they built a house on the lot next to his).

And there are alligators in the lake, so make sure you have a fence.

That makes sense as far as open area. The small 'lakes' I have seen usually have water circulation from a sort of fountain in the middle of them.

Yikes! Did not think of that.

Is that common in all the lakes in the Houston area? What area is your Dad's home in? I am looking at homes in the north (Tomball, Woodlands, Spring, Conroe).

Shouldn't be any alligators up there.

He's way out West.

Gotcha. So you would agree with chris_ut then? No alligators up north.

No idea. I thought they were ubiquitous. I don't think my Dad expected to see any either.....it's not like it happens all the time, but it's happened more than once in the 5 years he's lived there.
