I really want an update from Dee! I don't think an RN would have trouble finding a job anywhere in Texas.

Default East End Historical District

I was a grad student for two years at UTMB in Galveston and had a great time living in an old Victorian home divided into two apartments. Road my bike to work and school, cycled up to the seawall many evenings and weekends for a long ride down the seawall, stopping sometimes to play pickup volleyball. Very nice for a single person. Now that I'm married and with kids I'm not sure if I'd go with that East End Historical District neighborhood ... I've heard (no direct knowledge) that schools are a bit dodgy. If you're single and used to small-town life I think you'll love it. I visit a lot and the whole area is gentrifying and the downtown and great with maybe not as much to do as houston but nearly - it's got an opera house (but more for other entertainments than opera) built with some of the best acoustics in the world 100 years ago. I'd heartily recommend it. Just stay on your east side of downtown and don't wander into the housing projects west of downtown if you're a jogger.

I live in Clear Lake and love it! We have our own Med Center and it is booming. It could be a great compromise and parts are on the water. We also have an awesome school system.

Galveston is also not as busy as Houston and is not as large.

In Galveston you could live in The Strand in a loft, a house in the eastern part, or on a beach house in the west end. It all depends on what you want.

Houston has all kinds of options from high-rise lofts to single family homes to low rise apartments. Just be careful where you rent in both cities.
