Which private high schools with strong STEM programs are recommended? Posts I see discussing Village School are pretty old. My friend and her husband (White native Texan family) are looking at the Village School for their son because of the STEM programs, but would also want a strong social environment as well as strong college prep. Looking for fall 2017 entry (9th grade). Transportation availability (yes, they know they have to pay for bus service) to school would be helpful since they live in the 290 area. Thanks.

Perhaps I'm stating the obvious but the more pressing question will be which private high school still has an opening for a student this fall. Admissions offers were mailed out mid-March and acceptances were due April 5th I believe. To your original question, any of the big name privates will have strong STEM (the trend is now STEAM) programs - St. John's, Awty, Kinkaid, Strake, Episcopal, St. Thomas. Personally I am wary of overtly religious schools like Houston Christian, Cypress Christian, etc.

Unfortunately, they are looking for a difficult combination. The Village School pushes an "international" curriculum emphasis that was probably aimed at all the expats working in the Energy Corridor. If they are looking for 1) private; 2) strong social environment; and 3) good STEM classes, then their best bet is probably Strake Jesuit. Strake's alumni network is stronger than those of many colleges, and there are a lot of them that live in Houston and surrounding areas their whole lives after graduation and college. Village is too new and too oriented towards a transient demographic to provide the social/alumni network that Strake provides. Of course, they have to be okay with it being Catholic and all-male (not everybody likes that).

. Otherwise, they would have known to start planning for private school a lot earlier. They are zoned to a decent public school, but they wanted something even better for their brilliant, STEM-oriented son. We'll see what happens.
