It's all relative. Maybe his time is more valuable than yours, therefore, a higher cost-per-hour for free time is reasonable.

When I worked for a housecleaning service, I made about $5.50-$6/hour based on 90 minutes inside the house cleaning. Minimum wage was $5.15 if I remember right (1997ish). If we weren't finished with the house in 90 minutes, then we were basically working for "free." Unfortunately with those 4000-5000+ sqft houses in the Champions area, you either did a great job or you rushed through and missed stuff.

I have no idea what they make now, but I hope it's a lot more than what I did.

I used to hire one of those professional cleaning services until one day I saw the cleaning lady emptying my hand soap bottle onto the cleaning wipes to clean the toilet seat. Initially I had asked them if I can supply my own cleaning supplies to which they said NO. Also anything that we wanted them to do it was extra fee like a bare minimum package just included them to show up and wipe stuff....

Based on my discussions with neighbors who use lawn services (and my impression of the quality of their work), and our experience the couple of times we've tried hiring a housekeeper, it's difficult to find hired help who will do as good of a job as a reasonably conscientious person with pride in his/her own house would do.

I take care of our lawn myself - yes, it's a lot of a work, but I'd rather do it right than pay someone $40 to do a crappy job or $70+ to do as careful of a job as I'd do myself (16k sq ft lot). We're still toying with the idea of hiring a maid service, but it's not a huge deal to spend half a day doing a thorough clean once a month or so, and running the robovac a couple times a week to keep the house tidy between cleanings.

It also depends on how dirty you are. We have 2 kids and 2 dogs. That is 6 living beings in this house. Two-thirds of us are slobs.
