Are you hot? Because you better be hot with a terrible attitude like that.

Insurance: seems stupid and expensive.

Until you need it.

Insurance is a gamble,
they are gambling that you are never going to need it, you are gambling that you are going to need it

Don't worry about the worst happening until it happens at this point.

If you're not in a flood zone and haven't flooded in the past, probably not going to flood this time.

Still plenty of time to dig a trench around the house that will help to keep water out

There are lots of people too smart to be in an area that floods.... whose houses flooded.

I live at the beginning of two different bayous that go in opposite directions
ANY area can flood under the right confluence of circumstances

Exactly. I'm forced to pay for FEMA flood insurance, which is so high because of cheapskates like the OP.

Personally, if you opt not to buy it, you opt to live in a whatever you can afford to rebuild. Or not.

Referring to your husband as *idiotic* is a much bigger issue than lack of insurance coverage.

Obviously you didnt feel it was important enough.

As to whether or not you are screwed - well that depends on where your house is. We are not expected to get more than tropical force winds...our straight line thuderstorms are stronger than tropical storms so the wind wont be an issue.

Flood - perhaps an issue, you will just have to see. If you were smart you bought an area that was built up enough not to flood...but that is only if you were smart.
If the house is in both names then both people have to sign the insurance policy I believe
At lease that is what we had to do with our flood ins and hurricane policies for FL house which is in both names
