Pedro has already admitted that there will be a decline in demand. What he is saying and is being ignored is that the refining process will still produce a large amount of gasoline that needs to go somewhere. I do not work in the refining business but he brings up an interesting point. From what I know the boiling point required to produce gasoline from petroleum is lower than that of many of the other hydrocarbons in oil. What this tells me is that in order to make plastic or grease there will most definitely be some gasoline produced. If the gasoline is not sold because there is no demand it should then in theory become some type of cost. I have no idea what the financial impact would be since the refineries would likely get the petroleum cheaper so maybe they could absorb the cost of "dealing" with the gasoline byproduct.

The same will continue in the next decade as EV becomes more mainstream and there's even less demand. I mean, did you even bother to read OP's article? I suggest taking an economics course at HCC if you can't grasp these simple concepts.
I can't believe that people still believe that BS.

Are you really that delusional? Every car manufacturer is making strides in introducing EV vehicles. Tesla just launched its model 3 which will absolutely change the face of this country if they can meet demand. Electronic is in, oil is out. Get used to it Houston.

When it comes to products, you’d probably be more hard-pressed to find something that doesn’t contain oil than something that does.
Without oil, we are mostly stuck with products made out of wood, metal and stone.

I don't think anyone is saying oil is going away.

But you can make plastic, diesel, and all kinds of other things out of plants. There's things we make from oil that we have to make from oil (tires come to mind) and there's things that we don't necessarily need to always use oil as the feedstock for.

That's a good thing. We can argue all day about how much oil is left but it is a nonrenewable resource. On a macro level we should be preserving it to manufacture the things we really need it for.

Oh, sure there are alternatives for things like resins, but are you willing to pay $10 for a red solo cup?

That's what they said 15 years ago when hybrids came out. "Batteries will become more affordable " poor kid from Morocco who works valet parking brought an old escort hybrid. I see him a week later and he's looking for a car. I ask what happened with the one he bought. "The battery cost 15k to replace" I felt bad for him.

As for full electric, if I could afford to buy a 37k tesla, where would I plug it in?

Putting things into perspective, to go electric, you need a salary that'll pay for a 37k car and an electrical outlet to plug it in every night, that most even high end apartment complexes don't have.
