Ok its decided, I am going to move to Houston's midtown area after graduation. But I also plan on working as a nurse and going back to school to do pre reqs for med school. Are there any hospitals as well and colleges than offer what I am looking for around midtown???

If you live in midtown, you can take the train about 10 minutes to the Texas Medical Center. It is its own city, the largest in the world for hospitals and research facilities. The only other prospect for you would be Christus St. Joseph's, right on the outskirts of downtown, near midtown. I'd go for the med center though!

Without speculating on what your credentials/experience are I can just say this in general about TMC.....

Unless you know somebody it's not necessarily all that easy to get on anywhere in the Med Center.. These aren't your local county/regional hospitals. They're getting a lot of applicants coming in from out of town with the same plans as you. It's possible your first job may be at a smaller outfit and you'll make some connections. You might luck into a position right away at Hermann or someplace like that, but that's exactly what it would be. But don't get discouraged - you might get what you want, just not right away. There are a lot of smaller hospitals, clinics and such but they are not necessarily going to be close to Midtown.

Are you going to have a car? Don't know if you've heard or not, but Midtown Houston is not Midtown Manhattan. That rail line and buses are the extent of mass transit here, at least for the time being.

St. Josephs is Downtown - other than that - the med center is nearby - by car or by light rail.

Of course I plan on driving. I do realize there is NO place like NYC especially when it comes to mass transit. So let me get this straight, you are telling me it will be hard for me to get a job around midtown???

I'm telling you it's probably not a good idea to start putting your name out there just as you arrive into town. You can send a resume through the TMC website, but it might be more than a year before you hear from anyone.

ok, I understand. Would I need to do that with St Josephs, or I believe Herman? Are those the only hospitals around midtown?? Any other hospitals around midtown or surrounding towns that will not be that bad of a commute?

St. Joseph's you could walk if you choose to. On rainy days, you might want to drive because it is several blocks but on a nice day not a bad walk at all. All other med center hospitals you would probably need to drive a car or take light rail.

There's the Memorial Hermann Memorial City Medical Center.

If you're living in midtown you'd possibly be going against the main flow of traffic at the usual commute times.
