I recently saw citronella plants at Lowes with the stickers claiming these plants do repel mosquitoes.
I would definitely prefer natural way of repelling mosquitoes, however just saw an article saying that this is all myth and citronella / lemongrass plants do not work at all.

But maybe anyone tried growing citronella / lemongrass in Houston?
Have you had any luck repelling mosquitoes with these plants?
I need to secure ~500 sf patio area from mosquitoes.

Default No...

Technically, yes, but in reality, no. Sales gimmicks, they don't work. You can smell it, so YOU think its working, but it does not.

Only thing that works is a strong fan.

Very true about the fan,
Im lucky to have a yard with constant wind
The moment the wind stood blowing, seems like mosquitos can smell me and find me

I find citronella candles to be completely useless, even indoors. I wouldn't expect any natural solution to work against the swarms that we get in the hot months.

I agree. A decorative plant with pleasant scent, but nothing more.
Testing shows that it does not repel mosquitoes. In fact, mosquitoes seem to enjoy sitting on the plant.

Yes I saw this article.
So thanks everyone for the participation.
I was hoping it might help to repel mosquitoes, but I would still probably get one plant for decorative purposes.

It has worked for us. We have two plants at the front yard near the front door, and a potted ones at the back patio. We sit out the back patio often and also added a citronella ceramic oil infuser. Never have any issues thus far. Good luck!

We plant marigolds around our patio and it definitely helps a lot with the mosquitoes.

Lowes is pretty much the most expensive place to get them.
Houston garden center is cheaper or even Walmart.
