Husband and I are looking for homes. I drove through the area called Ashford something, basically area between Dairy Ashford and Kirkwood off of Briar Forest. I loved the homes and the fact that everyone was out caring for their yards was very appealing and a good sign in my eyes. I also like that it's near the Terry Hershey trail. Anyone willing to share some inside scoop on this area? What about the schools in the area (Ashford Primary & Shadowbriar)?

I don't know too much about properties on the south side of the bayou. I do have house I'm working on between Wilcrest and Kirkwood, right on THP. It's so beautiful back there. The area I am zoned in is Spring Branch ISD schools, 77079. South of the Bayou is HISD.
I think Bush Elem and Westside HS have very good reputations though.

I have heard that people like Heathwood and the northern portion of Ashford Forest. The closer you can get to THP the better.

That sounds like either Ashford Hills or Ashford South. I live in the Ashford area. It's convenient because it's in between Memorial and Westheimer. You'll find big yards with many of the homes if that's important to you. I think there's good prices on the homes because many parents would rather send their kids to Spring Branch or Katy or Cy-Fair school districts, but if you check out the Great Schools web site I think you'll find that a lot of the HISD schools on the west side rate well.

Great area. Westside,Bush and West Briar have pretty high ratings and I know many people that have kids there. You may also like Lakeside Place or Walnut Bend

Ashford Forest - starts at about $170k, but quickly goes upward. Nice neighborhood.

How are those apartments along Briar Forest impacting things over there? I know the ones closer to Wilcrest and also Kirkwood are rough.

There's a lot of apartments in the general area and they can be very rough. They probably range from middle of the road to out and out dumps. It's just a reality of the area that there's a lot of people and apartments. I kind of wonder sometimes if it's starting to become like Spring Branch with that blend of middle class homes and tons of cheap apartments. Overall I don't feel unsafe, but I wonder about 10 years from now.

Hmm they aren't great, but what low income apartments in Houston are.

Country Village, Heathwood, Ashford Forest etc. have appreciated quite a bit over the past 5 years. So like everywhere, the impact of the apartments seems to be only in the apartments...so far. Visual Blight wise I think it has more of an impact.
