I have been looking for a house near Houston for over a year and I am at my wit's end. I feel that my dream of owning a home is dead. I have a pretty hard cap on my budget of about 150k and I'm looking for a house somewhat near Houston. Preferably on the west/southwest side. I know in this price range I won't necessarily be able to be in the best or the best, but I'd like to feel generally safe. I have mainly been focused on homes in Missouri City, but after visiting about a dozen or so homes in that area I'm kind of fed up with it. Many of the homes are left disgusting and broken. I'm trying to expand my search area but I have no idea where to go. Harvey has made the search even worst because many houses have been flooded.

There are no children in the home, so the quality of schools doesn't matter to me (though I understand that better schools usually means better neighborhood).

I have looked online at some houses in the Mission Bend, Four Corners, Huntington area. Many actually look really nice, but I've heard the area isn't so good. Is this true?

Any advice or suggestions would really be appreciated.

You want a house under 150k in a somewhat safe area and you don’t want a fixer upper

Good luck finding that house

You said "near Houston". How far from the city?
Use www.HAR.com search filters.

If you’re open to NW suburbs, Cypress has some quiet safe homes in your price point, zoned to some great schools. Older and in need of updating. See Bonaire neighborhood

Or Klein or Cypresswood near 249.

I would say change the area you are looking in. Northwest and northeast would be better suited for that price range for safe areas.

North Katy: on GreenHouse, Fry and Mason roads, north of I-10. Better stay south of Clay Rd.
Also probably old town Katy.
Yorktown area (West Little York/Hwy 6).
In this budget it will be a sort of lottery: higher chance of having a drug house next to you.
However everything is possible.

This may be a poorly received suggestion, but look at Fondren SW. Try to stay on inner streets and away from apartments and you'll stay safe. Another plus is I believe this area will appreciate eventually in this price segment. It's too close to a lot of good stuff nearby. It borders where you are looking in Missouri City but has a much better long term outlook, IMO.

North Katy / South Cypress, definitely. Also Bear Creek east of SH 6 (be very very careful about flooding there though), The Colonies.

Try looking at the subdivisions in NW Alief between Westpark and Westheimer, east of SH 6, also.
