I would completely disagree that people in the “Houston area” dress up. Sure, there are parts of town where that happens where it is all about business or image, but a huge portion of people here are dressed pretty sloppy. I’d be hard pressed to find another city where such a big proportion of folks are fairly unkempt.

Keep in mind that Houston does get hit by the occasional "blue norther", where temperatures will drop faster than Bill Clinton's pants.

The worst I ever got hit with was one night when I was teaching a class for HCC. Walked into the classroom at 6 pm, it was about 73 and I was dressed casually. Walked out at 10 pm and the roads were iced over, and I was miserable.

Eureka averages high of 55 and low of 41 in the coldest month (December). It also averages over 8" of rain in that month so most nights are overcast which prevents radiational cooling. Talk about classic Med climate, 8" of rain in December and 0.18" in July. It's too cool in Eureka for me but you have to remember it is almost in Oregon. Also, go inland a bit to Redding and see how much warmer it is!

All I need is summer clothes and a rain coat maybe right?
Sweater and pants for cold winter?
Is this a joke?
What temperature do you consider cold winter? 40F?

Bring whatever you feel is necessary. If you need something, there is always a Walmart or some clothing store around the corner.

Yes, I was really talking about in the office or in the nice malls.

Most California winter days are in the 60's and 70's (and sometimes 80's and 90's) in Southern California and in the 50's & 60's in Northern California (with some 70's thrown in). When I lived in Northern California, the "coldest" highs were in the low 50's and the nighttime lows never got below 34. Southern California is even warmer.
When we lived in Bakersfield, we had many days in the high 20's. California temperatures vary widely across the state, and making blanket statements is not a good idea.

Have you ever been to California? When I lived there in the winter if it got below 45 they started their fireplaces up. This was in the Bay Area. In LA they consider a nighttime temp below 50 cold. I'm not making this up.

The first winter I was there it's around 45 degrees one night and clear and at the same exact time it was 20 degrees in Houston, 18 degrees in Dallas, -5 in KC, -10 in Chicago, and 8 in NYC. It was 55 that night in LA. The next day was a high of 65 under sunny skies in the Bay Area and 80 in LA whereas it was 37 in Houston, 22 in Dallas, 0 in KC, -8 in Chicago, and 15 in NYC. The next week, it was in the upper 50's with rain in the Bay Area, mid 60's in LA with partly cloudy, 72 and humid in Houston, 58 and rainy in Dallas, 20 in KC, 0 in Chicago, and 30 in NYC.

They have nothing equivalent to our "blue northers" in California. However they also don't get those roller coaster rides we get down here with blue northers then quick return flow off the Gulf.

For someone from California, our weather takes a lot to get used to, both summer and winter. Spring and fall are nice though.
