Houston is a very large city which is attractive to me, but I wonder what there is to do when you get tired of the hustle and bustle and you want out of town for a day. Are there any large lakes, state parks, campsites, etc? I'm also really into hiking and biking. Does Houston have any good trails for me?

I'm just debating between a few cities and Houston is one of them!

Thanks guys!

The Matagorda bay area and the surrounding coast line is some of the best sports fishing around. River, Bay or deep sea. Port O'Conner has good guides...google around.

I could not resist. If it is hiking, camping fishing and just plain nature's beauty I must recomend Lake Livingston State Park. Actually recreation around the big lake is endless. Go try Wolf Creek Park for a day of fun. My favorite place indeed. They even expanded the tent section last year to accommodate the Katrina refugees who never came (thank the stars). We stay in the RV park from #19 on up to like 26 which are all water front sites. If you cant catch Catfish here you ain't fishing.

You can rent boats up in Indian Creek Marina or Bethy Creek. Or you can just drive the countryside.

Good luck !

We camp a lot, for some state parks close to Houston:

Texas State Park Guide

I also like Lake Livingston State Park and Lake Somerville. Somerville has no developments on it so it's very natural. They also allow horses so there are special camp sites with horse stalls. Fun to look at.

Lake Conroe - resort area north of town
Clear Lake / Bay Area - residential and resort area just southeast of town
Galveston Beach - about an hour away
George Ranch Historical Park - in Fort Bend County and more typical Texas

I'm sure I'm missing others...

There are also lots of areas/parks both within Houston and outside of town for biking.
