I know Austin is one of the safest cities in the US but does anyone know how Houston rates? Does anyone know if its true that Austin is the 15th or so safest city in the US? What number would Houston be? Thanks

Of course Austin is safer. It's much smaller. Especially with violent crime. There is, however, a lot of property crime there. And as far as Houston's crime it varies greatly depending on the area of town.

^^^ True.

Seems that over the last 10 or so years, Houston's violent crime rate was at its worst in 2006 but there's been a downward trend since. It also seems the locations in the city where violent crime is more common has become a bit more identifiable.

Anyway, Austin has less crime and is one of the safest cities in the country, for sure. Houston isn't anywhere near the most violent but it isn't one of the safest either.

Austin definitely would be on the safest list of cities with populations over 50,000 people (as far as Texas is concerned), but nationally it sits middle of the pack, however it is a lot safer than Houston. It is a much smaller city though, which you do have to take into account. I just looked at the list Houston sits around 68 or so on the highest crime index list on city data. (I was also shocked to see Boston on that list at #90.)

Leave your IPod in the passenger seat, park the car in Houston or Austin. Odds are you have a busted-out window and a missing IPod in either case.

Houston varies with violent crime. It's a problem in some places and not in others. Austin has a few rough patches on the east side, but it's not on the level of some spots in Houston (mostly decayed suburban areas between 610 and Beltway 8).

The burbs in Northwest Harris County has a larger population than the entire Austin Metro area and has a lower violent crime rate.

As always, it depends on where you live. some areas are safer then others.
A little real estate advice...if there are bars on the windows, they are probably not ornamental.
