I'm exhausted researching places to retire to escape the cold. I looked at Texas in the Houston area but am afraid of flooding and illegal immigration. So I looked at Florida and I'm concerned about sinkholes. Can anyone offer any wisdom on what might be the better choice? Any comments would be appreciated.

The bolded section is very telling. Normally I would say Arizona would be perfect for you. Many people there seem to share your sensibilities. However, they too seem to be flooding. Maybe invest in a good heating system and learn how to order from the internet.

Thanks but I love the outdoors and I can't stand being stuck inside. I've been forced to stay in the north all these years and I'm escaping. We live with high taxes too and we don't get much. This state has cut into our paychecks enough. I know that no place is the land of milk and honey but there are better places.

Florida doesn't have flooding and illegal immigration? To be honest, I am not sure what you fear about illegal immigration. I'm certainly not condoning it, but typically people who are here illegally do their own thing and try hard not to raise attention. In other words, if you are not involved with it, it won't affect you. Unless you are targeting the Valley, you may never come into contact with the people you fear so much.

Small town in Central Florida. Less sinkholes, less illegals and a good climate.

If I were retiring right now I’d look at Eastern Tennessee or North Carolina.

I can understand why flooding in Houston and sinkholes in Florida would be a concern, but why are you afraid of illegal immigration?

Why many users are so protective of illegal immigration? Services in Houston are not really cheaper compared to up north, where is much greater chance to see real American doing same kind of job. And work ethics and responsibility are much better in latter case.
