Does anyone remember about 15~20 years ago Rice ranked at around #8 one year on the USN&WR ranking? They outranked my alma mater Vanderbilt which I think was around #17 at the time. The last version of the ranking put Rice at #16 and Vanderbilt at #14 with acceptance rate of 7.3%

It started changing 11 years ago when Vanderbilt started their Oppurtunity Initiative for financial aid to attract more applicants. It improved their ranking and lowered their acceptance rate.

Rice just announced their Rice Initiative for financial aid last year and it already attracting families who couldn’t dream of being able to afford an exclusive school like Rice. This should balance rankings in a couple of years.
