Hello,

I am a single mom trying to relocate to Houston. The most important factor for me is a safe neighborhood with good schools and availability to hospital/doctors because I have to take care of my elderly parents. I have searched in Friendswood and Pasadena since I have some friends living there. Also, I have friends that live in Katy and Springs. Currently, I am looking for a job for the next school year. So, my move will be during the summer.

Please any suggestions. This is my first time that I will plan to relocate from Miami. Overall, Houston seems to be more affordable than Miami.

Thank you in advance.

Commutes are long and painful here. You need to know work location before considering where to live. Plenty of good spots on all sides

If you're Venezuelan, Katy is dead-center in Texas. The Cinco Ranch area is the portion of the Katy area preferred by Venezuelans. (Cinco Ranch is an upper-middle class master-planned community, similar to Weston.). Many oil engineers like the proximity to their jobs along the I-10 West "Energy Corridor" and Downtown/Uptown (a.k.a. Galleria area).

Spring is the second-choice among the Venezuelan community if you have to work in North Houston instead of West Houston.

Commuting from Cinco Ranch to the Galleria is complete hell and will decrease your life expectancy. Your dealing with traffic on both 99 and I-10

Sugar Land is a much easier commute to both the Galleria and Downtown compared with Cinco Ranch or any other part of Katy for that matter.

Why would you assume the OP is Venezuelan? She is from Florida there aren’t many Venezuelans in Florida. One would assume she is Cuban, not Venezuelan.

And there aren’t even that many Venezuelans living in Katy either.

Welcome to Houston. The most important question to ask is this: where will you be working? If you live more than five miles away from your job, your commute is going to be a hassle.

Good morning to all,

Thank you for the input. I am looking to work in the CCISD DISTRICT. I am a teacher. I'm not venezuelan but acolombia . I am in the process of being hired as the end of the school year approaches, I need to wait. I will keep in mind all of your suggestions.

Clear Creek Independent School District ?

Pasadena, affordable but nothing to brag about and I'm sure once you drive around you'll see it isn't appealing.

Never really been through Friendswood, but have heard good things about it.

If you are working in that district, just stay near, I would say Pearland is the furthest west.

Are you bringing your parents with you? The good news is that downstairs master bedrooms are very common here so it should be easy to find a home that is suitable for them. Most of the major hospital systems here have local centers where you can find most specialists, so you likely won’t need to be at the actual Medical Center very often.

The OP named the top two suburbs popular with Venezuelans. A little odd coming from Miami! But she is from neighboring Colombia.

Google "Katyzuela":
The first Venezuelans were Westerners from Maracaibo, the energy hub for Bolivarian South America. Citgo is on Eldridge, so it was logical for them to live in Katy on a petroleum engineer's salary.

Like I always say AliefNorth, you might want to check behind the Barker Reservoir. It's not the '90s anymore and Houston has grown significantly in the two decades! Also there has been an exodus from that country over the past few years, if you have been out-of-touch with the news! Miami is more popular due to the distance and support systems, but Houston is second because of the existing community from the global energy industry.

There might be a healthy Venezuelan community in Katy, but the name "Katyzuela" is frankly stupid. Its no Doral. Its 63% non-Hispanic white.
