What is the job market for the trades in Houston? I recently visited family in Houston and I love it. I’ve loved visiting there since I was little. But the thing that blows me is the wages. I’m a journeyman electrician. Where I live in rev Midwest we make $45 an hour. When I checked wages for electricians in Houston it was about $20 an hour. That was very alarming. If not the trades, what are some hot careers in Houston right now? ****, if I come down there I just need to start my own shop.

Professional tradesmen who work supporting the oil business, such as those offshore on rigs, or in refinery's or oil terminals do very well, pulling in salaries between 60 and 80 for shift work.

Too much competition, if you come with a $45 rate, there's plenty that can do it for much less.
Be careful and good luck.

Look at the cost of living, not just the wages. How do rent, total tax burden, utilities, etc. compare? We have no state income tax, but the property taxes are higher. Overall tax burden is typically low compared to most states.

Some places in the Midwest are probably much more expensive than Houston, others might be a little cheaper.

You might consider HVAC repair as an alternate career path in Houston. The demand for that is endless. If you owned your own HVAC business here, you should make a pretty good living.

Are you currently working through a labor union? It's been my experience that you'll have a lower starting wage in the Houston area because there's a ton of competition and the market is flooded with general labor but it doesn't take long to make much better money if you know what you're doing and you have a solid work ethic. We've got tons of people willing to work in Houston due to an abundance of cheap labor but a lot of these laborers have very few skills other than general manual labor. With that being said, if you can't find a gig making $30+ an hour as a journeyman in the Houston area right now something is wrong. There's so much demand for skilled (sober, clean and reliable) electrical/plumbing labor right now it's insane.

^^ I was going to mention labor unions as well.

My wife's cousin is a seasoned electrician and make swell over $25 an hour. He has his pick of jobs and does mostly commercial and residential new builds and remodels where the properties have been taken to the studs. It surely has taken him some years to get to this level and be well connected to builders, flippers and remodeling companies.

The state university did a study and found 1/2 the contractors in Texas are illegal.

The Great state of Texas just decided plumbers did not need to be licensed.

The IBEW is active and strong in Houston. Go there first.
