Will the city follow ?

Two of Houston’s biggest universities were named the best places in North America for studying entrepreneurship, accolades that have academic and local leaders celebrating the milestone and considering how the city itself could reach that same level of esteem as a destination for entrepreneurs to launch and grow companies.

Princeton Review and Entrepreneur magazine on Tuesday selected the University of Houston as the No. 1 undergraduate school for entrepreneurship studies and Rice University as the No. 1 school for graduate programs, marking the first time both schools have received the top spot and the only time a region other than Boston has taken No. 1 in both categories.

Rice is small by population, not by size or campus. That’s part of its greatness.

Does Houston retain the talent or do most graduates leave Houston?

Rice only picks the best of the best, so the impact from its alumni are superior to a large school with a decent population size. In large schools, a lot drop out, a lot don’t excel much and very few succeed to the degree thar a student that went to a Rice caliber school do. If anything, it is even more impressive that elite schools smaller in population have a bigger impact than a school like Texas State. The elite talent pool is much higher at a small elite school than a large sized average/above average school.

That’s like saying UH-Clear Lake has a higher talent pool than Rice because the student population is much higher. That doesn’t make even the slightest of sense.

I agree with the sentiment. Outliers can find their path through any obstacle. Nick Saban could probably lead Alabama football without his college degree. Nick Saban could probably lead Amazon if he wanted to.

But there are scores of people on the periphery who COULD become successful entrepreneurs with a little direction and guidance. That's where college comes in.

Not only that - the degree doesn't automatically pigeonhole you into a single profession. There are numerous paths that open up with a college degree, and not everybody who pursues this degree is dead set on becoming an entrepreneur. There is also an intrinsic value to the path of getting the degree in addition to the end result.

Remember people like Bill Gates had family money and connections before dropping out of college. Zuck went to an expensive private prep school and also had lots of support.

However a four year degree may not be necessary for many entrepreneurs: it depends on the industry and/or the field. People may just get a trade down, do the trade for X years, and then start a business once he/she/they has enough money.

Glad my nephew is going to the business school at UH for entrepreneurs. I told him not to waste his or parents money at UT or A&M. UH is a good school. This isn’t like 20-30 yrs ago where UH was avoided for the other two
