The Slave trade was extremely brutal and took many years to abolish. What WW did was horrible even considering the times. His predecessor Pres Teddy Roosevelt had made progress by hosting Booker T Washington at the White House amid much criticism. WW reversed all of that progress and greatly damaged racial conditions in this country.
You're pretty sure, but you are wrong. It wasn't limited to indentured slavery. Read about Rome or Sparta. India's caste system was hardly much better. And I don't know how "captured enemies" makes the institution less offensive. And you should know that most of the slaves acquired by the Portuguese were "captured enemies" of West African tribes.

Yes. renaming Jeff Davis certainly made sense, but not Sidney Lanier. Reagan was pretty extreme too as he was most know for his pre-war and post-war life, not for being the Confederate Postmaster.

For sure. But this is (or should be) an easy fix. I wonder how many remember WW for his contribution to the progressive League of Nations and know nothing or very little about his extreme racist actions. It's disappointing that they took the action to rename schools, monuments and streets of Confederates, but left Woodrow Wilson school alone.

I went to WW years ago. And Lanier. So did Walter Cronkite, although he went to San Jac for high school instead of Lamar.

I'll remind you young people that Houston was founded by real estate developers.

And at the time many people knew slavery was wrong. Moses and Stephen double crossed Spain and Mexico. The deal was they could bring settlers, but they had to survey. And no slaves. Stephen had other ideas.

Please remember that on March 2 and April 21.

What is even dumber than that is the school still renamed itself Lanier Middle School! They just said it was former Mayor Bob Lanier of Houston. Now if you don't agree that that was asinine, then you have an agenda.

The latest trend is now removing statues that the WOKE people don't agree with. They don't know that they cannot rewrite history without unintended consequences down the road. That famous line comes to mind... "Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it.". Who's to say that what they replace them with won't be found guilty of something offensive to some in the future? It does not make any sense. The Left are loosing their minds. Also, what comes next after statues are removed, military bases and schools renamed, streets renamed, squares renamed? The only thing that will remind people of what they don't like are other human beings, then those will be 'next'. Be careful what you wish for.

ironically most of those schools demographics changed so let it stay as a reminder change happens

However, HISD and Brown vs. Board forced folks to attend the schools they had no business attending in the first place which killed history on the side of the fence we should've worked harder to keep.

When TSU was founded it was the only public school in the area and they were supposed to be founded and funded as an African American University of Texas. It took off quicker than expected and they were beginning to make inroads with other minority groups and UH was quickly converted from public to private to stymie growth.

There was a lot of anger over renaming Lanier, since Sidney Lanier wasn't a Confederate hero or big player in the Confederacy. A lot of that anger was driven by the awful manner in which Jolanda Jones, one of the more crappy politicians we have in the area, ramrodded the whole renaming thing through with little public input and lots of fake anguish.

I din't have any real heartburn over Davis, Lee, Johnston, or Jackson being renamed. Dowling was a little iffy, but renaming Reagan and Lanier was really annoying.

UH is not a private school. It is a public funded University.

What do you mean by forcing folks to attend schools they had no business attending?
