Hello everyone, I am currently attending school in the suburbs of Houston, a few months ago I found out that Houston ISD had a magnet program for aviation at Sterling High School. However, when I did more research about this school, I found out that this school has a high crime rate, low test scores, is in a not so good neighborhood, and the majority of students are low income. Although this is concerning, this does not completely discourage me from attending it because its aviation program seems good. My questions are, is the overall environment of the school good? Will I feel safe and welcome in this school? I would like to hear any information that could be considered helpful to make my final decision. Thank you in advance.

Well I looked it up...kind of strange school 1/10.
Everything appears to be quite bad there.
I don't know how aviation program could be good, if this school sucks in every aspect?

This school is rated below average in school quality compared to other schools in Texas. Students here are making below average year-over-year academic improvement, have below average college readiness measures, this school has below average results in how well it’s serving disadvantaged students, and students perform below average on state tests. Large disparities in suspension rates exist at this school, which is concerning.
One of the reviews:

Students fight in the classroom all the time. One student sexually assaulted another student. The Administration knew about it. The School police got involved. But nothing was done about it. The offender was back in class. Transgender students (boys wearing girls clothes) use the girls restrooms at HISD.

One of the reviews:
Yes, I'm aware of the reviews and ratings, however on a different website called Niche there are more positive reviews, which is why I'm confused on whether or not the school is bad. Only a few of the students are in the aviation program and seem to be doing good compared to other students in the school.

I had a cousin come from there and is a pilot. And that was from the old building.

They have had this program forever. I wanted to go there for high school 20ish years ago to enroll in the aviation program but my parents wouldn't let me because of the low test scores and academics outside of that program.

With that said, I know a guy who's son came out of there a few years ago and is just about to finish up at the flight program at Ohio State (or at least was pre-Covid). It will be some tradeoffs to going there but I'd at least visit and check it out before you decide.

I recommend trying to get accepted before you go about making any decisions. It’s extremely difficult to get into these magnet programs, and even harder if you are not a HISD resident.
