Does anyone know anything about a city called "Katy" in your area. I heard yesterday that it was very nice. Do they have Condo's and medium priced homes in that community??

Brian77008: Thank you for the post. I love the outdoors but I can't enjoy it the way I would like to here in Detroit. I am really tired of snow and cold. Your description is Great. My daughter is a Detroit Police Officer and she and her husband are thinking about moving to Houston after retirement in about 3 years. I will already be there so I will be able to help them adjust to their new environment.

One of Houston's biggest disadvantages is the heat and humudity--while 100+ is not typical, high temperatures in the upper 90's are common in the summer.

That said, compared to Detroit, Houston is great. I would definitely encourage such a move. The economy in Houston is light-years ahead in terms of growth and opportunity, and Houston is not nearly as racially polarized or segregated.

Houston is a very large and diverse city with a large African-American population. It is, however, in a southern state and thus one need not scratch too far in some places to find racial hostility. There is an abundance of conservatives who are hostile to illegal immigrants, affirmative action, etc., and "red necks" are plentiful. But it certainly NOT the "old south," there are plenty of urban sophisticates (including a large gay population), too, and Texans are very welcoming of newcomers. Houston's raison d'etre is pursuing opportunity and making money, and that interest transcends all racial and ethnic lines.

Katy is very nice but bland suburb on the far west side of Houston. It is a conservative, middle/upper-middle class 'burb where Chevy Suburbans and Republicans outnumber Toyota Priuses and Democrats by about 10 to 1.

I think as long as you make an effort to find a neighborhood that suits you, you would love Houston. I recommend that you rent for a while when you first get here and devote yourself to learning about the pluses and minuses of the different neighborhoods.

As far as being conservative, the metro area skews Republican, but Houston proper is definately Democratic.

Katy is a clean, nice area, but I wouldn't advise anyone to live there if they work downtown and drive during rush hour. The traffic is horrendous, although it may improve when the new freeway expansion is finished.

I did a spit-take when I read this. Freeway expansion has been going on in Houston as long as there have been freeways--it is a never-ending process but it never ends the traffic.

And what is wrong with republicans? I am a conservative, southern, God-fearing republican , I treat everyone well and expect to be treated the same way. I just happen to believe that people should work for a living and the harder you work, the more money you make. Welfare is meant to help folks in trouble, not take care of them for life. I also believe illegal immigrants should not be given rights when they are breaking the law. I think it is unfair that people who struggled to get here legally have to live next door to people who cheated the system and we let them get away with it, not to mention the crime they bring with them and then disappear back to their country when it comes to arresting them.
So, lets leave the politics out of this. Houston is a city that is a melting pot of different cultures and beliefs, the great thing about it is we coexist for the most part without any problems and we accept each other for who we are.

You sure are quick to jump to conclusions and spout off political opinions. If you read my post you'll note that I said nothing despairing about Republicans; I simply said that they out number Democrats in Katy.

SKYEANJEL: Guess What? I am an Independent Voter. I vote for the person not the party!! I have not made up my mine which one of the "Three Musketeers" to vote for. They are all beginning to "Change" before our eyes. I kind of liked John Edwards.

PROFESSORSENATOR: Thank You. To be honest with you...I do not want to move in an area where there is a large Gay population. I like to Ballroom Dance, but my choice of Partner is a straight Man. Remember, I am a Widow, with grandchildren who would like to marry again.

Like almost all major U.S. cities, Houston has a significant gay population. These folks will have no impact upon your ballroom dancing.

I must say that I find your comment very disconcerting. I would guess that you might be somewhat offended if someone told you that they didn't want to move to an area where there is a large black population.
