Top Chef chose Houston for its 19th season. Season 9 was Texas (the only time they chose a state rather than a city) but it was mostly in Austin with San Antonio and Dallas also getting occasional play.

Thoughts?

Edit: Colorado and Kentucky were also chosen as a state before.

Mixed feelings. Houston has a lot to offer as a host city, but among Top Chef fans, the Texas season you reference above was considered one of the weakest and many people's least favorite due to dislike of many contestants (aside from Chef Ed Lee, who did well, but did not win). The winner, Paul Qui, is from Houston, and has had a lot of bad press the last few years.

OTOH, Houston chef Dawn Burrell was a finalist and well liked this past season, so there could very well be a bump from that.

Interesting. I also read that the reason Houston wasn’t included in season 9 is because local leaders weren’t interested in offering incentives that Top Chef was demanding at the time. I’m guessing the new leaders are more interested in publicity and were willing to invest here.

Either way, it’s better to have your own season than to be placed as one fourth to the Texas season.

Yes, apparently, it's generally well known that cities give major financial incentives to bring Top Chef in, although I don't know the details.

Go to the Reddit BravoTopChef site and there are already several threads about the Houston selection. I would say about 1/3 very positive (which appear to be mostly from people who live here) and about 2/3 negative due to a combination of my aforementioned dislike of the previous season featuring Texas, but also the opinion that no business should be coming Texas's way due to the newly passed abortion bill (an opinion that's not surprising considering how liberal and young Reddit tends to skew).

It also looks like they started filming the main part of the season in late August and may already be finished filming or near to it. Again this season, due to Covid restrictions, it sounds like there were no events or challenges open to the public.
