From what I heard, metal is popular among the members of the military.

Hollywood musicians have to perform at the Rodeo. Independent artists have to appear at SXSW.

The points that stood out to me are 1) The lack of terrestial radio in Houston promoting Houston concert events. 2) Appathetic concert goers who many times will waite until the last second to decide to attend a concert. 3) Inadequate venues with poor infrstructure. 4) Austins atractivness , bands want to perform there on weekends leaving mid-week dates for Houston which would be poorly attended. 5) Bands don't want to hang out in Houston prefering Austin or New Orleans.

The other key point in the article was the college crowd in Austin which practically guarantees great crowds on Fri/Sat. Although Houston has several universities it doesn't have that same reputation as Austin for being a college town.

The other point was venues and as the article states this is improving for Houston with White Oak music hall and Post Houston.

The biggest issue, as you pointed out, is not having dedicated radio stations for the indie genre.

Houston is more into Hollywood music than indie, metal, and other obscure genres. Hip-hop and its influences have successfully integrated into mainstream pop for the past decade. The only other popular genre in town is classical at Jones Hall.

The Houston Rodeo gets the cheesy mainstream crap musicians, mostly.

The Austin and San Antonio Rodeos get the way better Texas Red Dirt musicians and get to skip out on hip hop day and the cheesy pop garbage.

Yes, our terrestrial radio stations in Houston completely suck. Mostly hip hop and Tejano and one cheesy mainstream country station. Reason one why Spofity and XM are your friends in H-Town.

Looks like SA and Dallas also rank toward the bottom with Austin ranking 4. Indianapolis ranks #2 while Miami ranks #50. I don't really think of Indiana when It comes to live music.

Houston is a ****ty place for educated people. There aren't nearly enough, good entertainment venues. A metro area with 7+ million people should have a major amusement park, there are more people here than live in most states. The music scene sucks. When a big show does come to town, security is so bad you might get trampled to death by a herd of idiots or some gangbangers will come shoot up the place. Even the Galleria is under siege. It has become an absolute ****hole.

If you think Houston sucks, then your attitude will only make it more so. Just leave, and make things better for everyone. Be part of the solution than more of the problem. Adios.
