The general idea about salaries in US is that

B.sc. grads make 2-3 K /month
M.sc 3-4 K
& Ph.d's more than 4K/month.

Is that the reality in Houston ?
Where are you getting your information from? The 90s?

It's way more than that... at least for me I would hope for others as well.

$96k out of school for an MBA salary. Hmm, I don't know about that, considering recently that degree has been labeled ''a dime a dozen.''

Unless you went to a tier 1 school and have experience.

4k for a Ph.d is the norm in the U.S.? That's pathetic... In my experience it's at least triple that with 10 years experience.

Good call. Someone like Chelsea Clinton is a perfect example. She started out with her little $8k/mo salary, give or take. Also in NYC, too.

"Post-Doctoral Fellows" often make $30k/yr with a newbie PhD. From all the listings I've seen, $40k is on the high end. For biological science, anyway. Just look at UTMB or UTHSC listings if you don't believe me.

I'm not terribly sure where that general idea comes from.

That may be a decent measuring stick for a recent graduate's first job, but salaries are almost completely subjective, discretionary and probably have more to do with an individual's perceived value to the organization than educational qualifications.

To the OP, I don't know about Detroit but I have a pair of friends who went off to NYC after college to do the whole "New York A-Hole Financial Analyst" thing and managed to maintain their inflated NY salary after transferring to some "Texas Prick Financial Analyst" position here. If you negotiate your job before you move you will be in a much better position than if you wait until after you have arrived here.

If you throw a rock in Texas you hit fifty lawyers. The lawyers respective falls, however, will be broken by one hundred MBA's.

Unless your law or business degree comes from The University of Texas, you are in peril of getting lost in a veritable ocean of job applicants (in this state anyway)

Don't you live in Boston?

I'm the resident expert on Ph.D. salaries since my husband Matt is one and a postdoc at MD Anderson. You only see 6-figures when you are tenured, feufoma. tstone is pretty much on target, most postdocs make between $30-$40, but Matt is a 5th year (this is his last year as one) and he is making $43, BUT he also teaches biology and micro at HCC to boost up his salary so I can stay home with the girls. Now, when he becomes an Assistant Professor (um, hopefully in the next year...) he'll be pulling in $70-75K at MD Anderson. The jump to Associate in another 5 years will bring $80-$90.

We're just hoping for tenure before he turns 55!
