What's normal to me as friendly in Texas is too much for places (especially north and interior of the US) that are quieter and more reserved. They aren't used to being so open and communicative. So what's a positive in Texas is a negative elsewhere. So if you're from elsewhere, it might be hard to jibe with the local friendliness here. Wanting to retreat into the personal shell when others are kindly and innocently trying to pull you out a bit, because people enjoy that communication, which is considered normal.
Bingo. I moved from Houston to PNW and this is soo true.

My understanding of southern hospitality is that it’s basically small town friendliness
Why in the World would people think they can find small town friendliness in a city of 6 million people?

If you come to Texas and walk away with the feeling that people here are not friendly or welcoming....it is YOU and not us.

We are pretty much friendly to anyone that is friendly to us. We don't care where you came from or what color you are.

However, if you are a jerk or have an abrasive personality...yeah...you might walk away from here thinking we are not friendly. Maybe Boston is more your speed.

the city likes to always brag about friendliness, but you'll find lots of a**holes here. also, the way drivers treat other drivers, you would know it.
