What's your opinion?

I am totally for the right to bear arms but I don't think I would ever walk around overtly displaying my gun... but maybe I would...

It's legal to carry a stun gun (I think), mace, a knife, baton.... but do people go around carrying these "protective" items out in the open? Not really. Just imagine people walking around with a knife clenched in their fist... it's legal but scary (heck maybe it's not legal).

Has anyone signed the petition?

I made fun of this on the Texas forum.

https://www.city-data.com/forum/texas...rry-state.html

Personally, I'd rather break out my Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle belt, complete with the nunchuks, clubs and pitchforks. A secret place will hold my ninja star.

Seriously though, CC is fine, but I'm not scared enough to support this measure. It's a little over the top. JMO.

Montana has an open-carry law that seems to work fine for them, it's a bit unsettling to be negotiating a lease in a restaurant with a guy wearing a Glock 21 on his belt, but it doesn't seem to bother the locals and is ubiquitous. That said, I don't think that Houston is a good candidate for open carry. Some parts of Texas maybe, but not here. The population is too dense and there's too much traffic.

Are you saying that people would be more prone to irrational behavior because they have a gun? Wouldn't that already be the case? Whether concealed or not if they have it they could use it.

Who thinks having open carry would increase the number of people applying for a hand gun permit?

This is basically what I was thinking. 'Not allowed in areas with a population that exceeds X.' Sounds like Nevada's prostitution laws now that I think about it.

But around Houston I'd be afraid someone would try and rip it off of me. Too many wannabe-thugs and pranksters in many areas. Before I do this i would need some type of self defense lesson, but would be walking around on edge all the time if I had one. If I wanted to be like that I'd have become a police officer.

No, that's not really what I'm getting at. What I said about "too much traffic" was lighthearted. This is a completely subjective appraisal on my part, but I think that open carry in Houston would be obscene. There are just too many people here who have irrational phobias and harbor deeply ingrained stigmas about guns to have exposed firearms be a part of life. It would be more acceptable to a great many to have exposed genitalia than guns. It's just indecent to subject strangers around you to your firearms.

I have no problem with concealed carry. None whatsoever. I carry, my father carries, and my sister jogs with a .380 in her fanny-pack. That is more than fine with me, but I don't think that reasonable people would feel any need to wear a gun on their collective hip in this city.

You show Colts and Kimbers to your friends, you show Glocks to your enemies and you don't show anything to everyone else.

No, I don't think it's a good idea here or anywhere else. Didn't we move beyond the wild wild west?

Unfortunately a lot of Texas did not.

Default Scary...

When I lived in Arizona, people could wear their firearms in public. I just remember taking my son to the movie one time and there's Joe Blow, wearing his gun on his belt, to the movies.
My ex-husband is a Border Patrol agent, and even he did not wear his gun in public, only when he was on duty.

I dunno... Compton is still pretty wild. As far as the Southwest is concerned, there seems to be some regression taking place.
