It's...Galveston. I kind of figured you meant places to go outside the immediate area, which Galveston is kind of considered part. You've got some roughness on the island, but it's not really where the tourists go. Kind of like New Orleans, but smaller.

San Antonio, Galveston, Austin, Dallas, New Orleans, and smaller towns like the ones mentioned here for festivals and events... like Kerrville Festivals... Plantersville for Texas Renaissance Festival 2008... and I've got friends who set up in Round Top every year. Order a Travel Texas guide for more ideas. TravelTex Home Other than that, we've got those two airports for a reason. Most people I know use them for weekend getaways to points beyond Texas instead.

Oh, yeah, once upon a time I was very interested in the culture of Southwest Louisiana and Southeast Texas. There are a lot of festivals and things to do around there as well, like Breaux Bridge Crawfish Festival. And I like the music better than that stuff you find in the Hill Country.

We just did a weekend trip to Austin and had a fabulous time. From Sugar Land, we did the drive in just under 3 hours with a stretch break in the middle for gasoline and snacks.

We are going to South Padre in August and we will break up the drive into two parts of three hours each with an overnight stay in Corpus Christi.

Someone this week told us that the Hyatt Regency Lost Pines Resort and Spa in Bastrop is pricey but very nice.

I just did a search from Houston to Brownsville, TX (South Padre Island), the round trip with taxes was $149 (Expedia).

If and when I move to Houston, I'll be taking that trip more than 1X a year I assure you!

Austin is my favorite lots of things to do, I would not live there though, such a small town.
